Re: Teachers-has anyone gone back for their PhD?

I'm in an ed. admin. program, and there are lots of teachers in my program. Is your goal admin. or additional credits? It's intensive, so to be honest if I wasn't planning on admin. I think I would just continue taking other credits to max out the pay scale.

There are a few colleges in the area with EdD/PhD in Ed. programs...Not sure about el. ed. specifically...Hofstra, St. John's, NYU, Columbia, Dowling are the ones I looked at. Generally the shortest program is three years going part-time, but many students don't finish within that time period since it means completing and defending your dissertation within that time.

Re: Teachers-has anyone gone back for their PhD?

I am currently in my second year of doctoral work at NYU, but I'm getting my degree in educational administration. I go part time (teach HS full time). It is a 60 credit program plus dissertation. So far I have completed 21 credits. All of my course work will probably take me a total of 3.5 years, and then a year approx. for the research and dissertation.

ETA: Yes, it is a lot of work, a lot of reading and research time. However, I am truly happy that I decided to do it, it is very rewarding and will help me move up the administrative ladder.

I wouldn't be doing it for administration. I guess just to do it. I don't think I want to be a principal but I would love to get my doctorate in el. ed. if possible.

Re: Teachers-has anyone gone back for their PhD?

I looked into a PhD at Columbia but never followed up. I think Hofstra might have one in Literacy. I'd like to do one too in Early Ed or maybe Literacy. People tell me I'm crazy, saying why bother. I kinda just want to do it for me (nerdy, yesChat Icon )

Re: Teachers-has anyone gone back for their PhD?

FYI, St. John's has one in Instructional Leadership and there are a lot of teachers (this is in addition to their education administration program). There are various strands that you can take, including learning styles, technology, administration, curriculum, etc.
They are also planning on adding a doctorate in literacy, possibly by next fall. They just announced it the other night at a forum on campus. So, I doubt there are materials available yet.
I am in the EdD in Instructional Leadership, if you have any questions about that.

I thought about it briefly, because I would like to teach at the college level someday, and a PhD would help. But I don't think I can do any more school!

Is that what you're thinking about, teaching college? Since you already have teaching experience, you'd be very marketable with a PhD. When I was at CCNY, our professor said that they had a really hard time filling positions, because there were PhDs who'd never really taught, and people without PhDs but with substantial classroom experience. People with both were hard to find, and that's what CCNY wanted.

I have my eye on the Dowling edD program, but probably not for other 3-5 years, minimum.

Re: Teachers-has anyone gone back for their PhD?

For what it's worth, I am really glad I am doing it, but it takes up A LOT of my time. Having to turn down family functions, spending all weekend and weeknights doing homework and research...I know there is no way I could handle having a baby while working full time and doing this, so we will not TTC until I finish my dissertation. There are lots of ABDs (all but dissertation) out there, but I have worked too hard for that to be me. It's doable, but it in no way compares to the difficulty or time commitment of master's degrees or master's level classes. It's like that x50. I was prepared for what to expect, but I go weeks without being able to spend a night with DH because of how busy I am. I'd like to say if I had to do it over again I would, but I'm not sure. It certainly has involved many sacrifices.

I guess my advice would be to do it as early as you can to have it pay off.

I agree with you one hundred percent. I have no regrets either and I am glad that I had the opportunity to do it now, before children, because I don't think I would ever be able to do it if we had kids. It is a very difficult, albeit extremely rewarding and enriching experience. Good luck!

Re: Teachers-has anyone gone back for their PhD?

I agree with the last two posters. It's great that I have an understanding husband who literally does most of the housework and cooking so I can concentrate on work and school. I don't know how the women in my program do it that have children. There's one in my class that has 3 children - including a 4 month old! I'm hoping do defend before we begin TTC.

For the last couple posters who are doing PhD/EdD...are they programs on the island that are NOT Admin.?
If so, where and or what (sorry for mini thread hijack...)

Michelle is in Instructional Leadership, and Jenn and I are Ed. Admin.

ETA: I don't think it really matters what the degree is. If you are in el. ed. you can focus all of your research and programs in an Ed. Admin. program on el. ed., so I think the the end result is the same.
