Teachers how many of you can afford

Hi I was just curious to see how many teachers can afford to own a home?

My DH is the teacher and I a SAHM.As for now we rent and pay off student loans. But we are amazed at how people can do it on just a teachers salary.Long Island is soooo...expensive for a young couple with a child!!

This is not my parents Long Island!!

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

I was able to own a co-op on my own with my teacher's salery. I would never be able to afford our house we live in now without my DH and his job (he is not a teacher).

DH and I own a home. He is not a teacher. There is NO way we could afford our house on just my income.

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

We are both teachers. I do a lot of extras and could possibly afford our house on my income alone, but I wouldn't be leaving much room for anything else. However, it's because we both work that we were able to save a significant amount to have a good down payment. We couldn't have done that on one salary.

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

DH and I are both teachers in NYC and we just bought our first house....We couldn't do it just on one salary alone and I try and do extra hours or per session whenever I can for extra $$$. We also work over the summer

DH is a teacher but I work full time. we would not be able to afford a home with him just working.

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

We own a home in NC.
I make pretty decent money down here. and our mortgage is affordable, so when DH lost his job in July, we were ok just on my salary

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

i probably could but there would be NO room for extras. With DH's income, it would be much better, but then we want kids... it's so hard on LI. Thank god, i have no credit card or school debt--then i really would not be able to swing it. even then, it would be a LOW priced house...

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

i'm a speech therapist in a school, and we own a home in NJ ( almost as expensive as LI!) but DH works and makes good money.. we would NEVER be able to do it on just my salary! maybe DHs salary, but definitely not just on mine. will you eventually go back to work? i think in this area you need 2 salaries to afford a home... its hard on one, especially when that one is a teachers salary!

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

DH and I just bought a house...my teacher's salary is going to pay the mortgage every month (basically it will be deposited then the same amount will come right out to pay)

We will be able to live comfortably due to DH's IBM job but I'm sure I could have managed to live like a tightwad and survive on my salary alone

But I live in the Hudson Valley and cost of living/my mortgage is much cheaper up here than on LI

i wouldnt say its impossible, just a heck of a lot easier. while I said that if DH (the teacher) lost his job we wouldnt be able to afford it; we probably could swing it, but life wouldnt be enjoyable, kwim??

and we wouldnt be able to have saved a nice down payment like a previous poster stated.

Re: Teachers how many of you can afford

both of us are teachers and we got in before everything got super expensive. We live in a nice home in a modest area and middle of the way school district. I'd like to upgrade some day but don't think we're leaving soon. Oh BTW- our home was a total fixer upper and we did most of the work ourselves. We still have a long way to go. We have been here 6 years now.
