Teachers i have a ?
My ds just started 1st grade yesterday. All his friends from kindergarten are in the same class except for him. He is now in a class where he only knows very few kids. How is it determined what class a child will be the following year??? I was just curious. My best friend told me its pretty random where a child is placed the following year. Is that true at your school as well???
eta. my child is at or above his grade level if that makes any difference.
tia.

Re: Teachers i have a ?
In my experience it was not random. I know kindergarten teachers really try to make sure their kids have at least one kid from the K class in their new 1st grade class (that is what we tried to do when I taught K).
If you have kids who will be getting extra support (speech, OT, ELL) we try to make sure no one class will be overloaded with too many service pullouts. That is part of how the process is not random.

Re: Teachers i have a ?
Classes are usually leveled... he may be in the higher class. None of the classes in my building are random.
We have : honors on grade setts (general ed. with resource room children) inclusion (half special ed. and half general ed) target (all general ed. who need assistance)
The only parents who are informed of these classifications are the honors. Everything else is conspicuously labeled. Since these are the labels, its not uncommon for many kids in the same class to be looped up to be in the same class again.

I teach first grade. Classes are NOT leveled in my school and are not in most schools. They are heterogeneously mixed. Classes are pretty much random unless a parent requests that their child be kept with a friend or they request a certain teacher (which technically, they aren't supposed to do). I had this conversation with a parent yesterday. Right now it stinks that they aren't with their K friends but you'll be surprised at how quickly they make new friends!

every school is different. my school used to be heterogenious and now is not. we high higher and lower performing classes, esl student classes, inclusion classes, etc. ask.

Re: Teachers i have a ?
in my school it's not random...among other factors, one is an equal distribution of students from the previos years class so there are familiar faces

Re: Teachers i have a ?
In my experience, its not random. They sometimes ask the teachers which students can/can't or should/shouldn't be grouped together for various reasons.

Re: Teachers i have a ?
this hasnt been mentioned yet, but they also move students for behavioral and/or compatibility reasons sometimes. is it possible your child had an issue with another student last year and they felt like this year it would be better for them to be separated? just a thought

When we do classes for next year we look to see equal distribution high, medium and low levels also try to have all behavior pronblems in one class.
I always find the admin switches it over the summer anyway.

Re: Teachers i have a ?
In my school (nyc) it is not random, in fact the entire grade sits at the table and we sort through the kids with the principals and AP. Unfortunetly my principal likes to homogeneously grp the kids (all low esl in a class, all ais in another ect). Unless a teacher wants to loop with her class then most if the original kids stay together. But it isnt uncommom for us to request students be taken out ( if they conflict with another student or aomething like that)

Re: Teachers i have a ?
We spend many hours on placement every year and somehow, there will always be disappointments. On my grade level, my team does the best we can for each student's placement.
Here are some of the factors we consider in my school: - teacher/student needs (if a teacher is unstructured and the child needs a structured/organized teacher, things like that) - groupings for pullout services - boy to girl ratio - high to average to low ratio
When we are done, we make sure that every student has one classmate from their previous year but not necessarily a friend. Sometimes we purposely break friends up because they need a different experience...they'll see eachother on the playground.

same at my school. we also factor in race- we are a very diverse district and we try to make the classes balanced that way as well.
