Teachers I need your help!
My DH wants to go back to get his Masters in Secondary Education to become a math teacher and has hit a huge stumbling block.
He went to Queens College and they told him he needs to do in classroom coursework every semester. I thought, and so did he, that most of the in classroom work got done toward the end of the program.
The problem here is that my DH works full time in the electrical union, he NEEDS to work to support our family! There's no way he can quit his job for 2 years to get his degree. He was really let down by this information and I was just wondering if anyone out there knows if this HAS to be done this way, if there is another option or school, or ANY information I can guide him towards. I'm obviously clueless here.
I saw on Molloy's website that they are flexible toward adult learners changing careers so I told him to call there.
Any info is greatly appreciated!

Try to get in on this. It's 6 weeks in the classroom and they give you a stipend. It's how I did it.

what is his undergrad in? if he has it in education, he can start teaching and then complete his masters while working.
if he doesn't have it in education, then he has a few options:
1: finish his education classes (usually 18 credits) then start teaching and get his masters while teaching. my friend did it this way and it took her about a year to finish (while working fulltime) and her student teaching was done in one semester.
try going to a boces center. they'll look at his transcripts and tell him what classes he needs. you can also send his transcripts to the state for the same service (look on their website) but they take a few months to get back to you (as opposed to the 2-3 weeks boces takes) and are a general PITA to deal with.
2: and alternate certification program. this includes nyc teaching fellows and teach for america. unfortunately, they're not taking a lot of people anymore due to the economy, but it's worth a try. the fact that he wants to go for math works for him as well as it's a high needs area. i went the nyctf route and it worked well for me. you take an intensive summer with courses/student teaching, then start working in september as a teacher and taking grad classes at night.
he should also look into other programs as well. i can't think of any off the top of my head, but there's a lot out there for math and science teachers through colleges, school districts, and other programs.

what i would do is make an appointment with boces to have his transcript reviewed. essentially, he will be applying for his teaching certificate and getting denied (stupid, but that's how the state does it), but they will tell him what classes he needs to take in order to be qualified. then, he can register for those classes at a college and once he has completed them, reapply for his license and be issued an initial certification (which will become a professional certification once he finishes his masters). i guess you could do this all without going through boces or the state, but depending on what his core classes were in his undergrad he may need to take a class or two in something unexpected (such as a language), so you should really have them lay it all out for him.
honestly, if the economy wasn't what it is, i'd say to just go for an alternate certification program as they are the most direct route, but they're barely accepting people. it's still worth looking into though if, after his transcripts are reviewed, he has too many classes to make up.
you can also try looking into other grad schools. my friend got her teaching masters from LIU and didn't have to student teach until her final year.

The NYC Teaching Fellows extended their application deadline to 2/8, so I might pursue that route now, and if nothing comes of it, move on from there.
