TEACHERS: TOPIC: DEaling with the emotional side of teaching!
So how do you deal with the whiny he-said-she-said scenarios
Girls hurting eachother's feelings on the playground boys calling eachother names, etc.
Also, how do you deal with "can I go to the nurse?" moments??? Ive NEVER heard so many requests to go to the nurse. There should be a rule! When I was in elementary, you went to the nurse if you seriously needed to. I never went. ever. Now (maybe it's jsut with subs ) Ive seen girls scratch their scabs (in summer, wearing shorts) till theyre red and look terrible and then ask to go to the nurse. Give themselves a paper cut and ask to go to the nurse for a bandaid! "I have a stomach ache"
For the most part, we (subs) are told to LET THEM GO, it's not our call to make a judgement on whether or not they TRULY need to see the nurse, but so many times I just feel like its just so unfair and almost rude of them to take advantage like this! These poor school nurses!
Ive seen teachers many times say "put your head down, you'll be fine" or go get a drink, lets see how youre doing in a few minutes...
Advice on playing along with the mind games of these kids?

Re: TEACHERS: TOPIC: DEaling with the emotional side of teaching!
this is tough for me esp since i am a special ed teacher for a child who is in an inclusion classroom. she is clearly "different" from the others and they treat her that way! at the young age of four years old kids are so cruel! i try not to get personally involved but its hard.....usually i remind her to stick up for herself bc she doesnt really understand

This is something I do. Often I send them to the nurse and she sends them back saying it's nothing, sooooo, I ask them if they need to go to the nurse and if not, I tell them to do this. Often for my guys, it's hunger or a bathroom thing.
No advice. Send them and the nurse will discern whether it's a need or not.
The emotions of the kids are sometimes A LOT more difficult to deal with than actual teaching. I think that's one think non-teachers don't understand.

The nurse thing- if you look like you are busy with something and if they need a pass I would say to them- hang on one moment while I finish then and then I will write you a pass. Usually I will finish in 2-3 minutes and by that time the desire to go to the nurse is over. If they ask you again then let them go. I never stop a child. I will do the 2-3 minute distraction but I will never stop them. It's not my call IMHO.
The other thing I just tell them señora doesn't teach kindergarten for a reason and that I will talk to them when they graduate from there.

Re: TEACHERS: TOPIC: DEaling with the emotional side of teaching!
I have my typical kids who want to go to the nurse all the time - so those kids I usually tell, go to the bathroom, get a drink, etc. However, if a kid that never asks me wants to go then I send them. 9 times out of 10 they are hungry or have to go to the bathroom, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Especially if you are a sub.
Sometimes what I do is tell them that if they still feel sick then they should go to the nurse at lunch or during gym - they would only go during that time if they really needed to!

As a Physical Education teacher when I kids ask, because they fall (and it's minor) I tell them, do I have to cut the leg off and laugh with them and they stop crying. Or if they hit their eye, I have them just put water on it and get a drink.
Distraction is key!
