TEachers...spinoff from ED...Do you have Friday off even though Veterans Day is on Sat.?
I am working but my nieces and nephews that live here on the island are off. Why aren't I off????

Nope, not off. But I live in VA.
ETA: DH works in a different district and he has off... but he didn't have Columbus day like I did.

Why does the city not give us off? Yet, we still get out the latest in June. We never get a snow day so, what the heck. Why not give us off??

because Bloomberg said since Veterans day is technically a saturday this year- school is on.
FH is not happy, especially since all the jewish holidays were on the weekend this year too.

I am off on Monday, my stepson is off on Friday though, I would have preferred the Friday off, its my busier day..but hey any day off is fine by me!!

city teachers have to give up so much to get a raise, its really unfair.

It's because Bloomburg is an idiot.
Because every time we re-negotiate our contract we give more hours and more days .... for not much of a raise...
Because in NYC the schools are run by business men and polititians and not Educators....so they do what they want according to a business-standpoint --- completely driven by test scores and thinking that ONE day (or maybe a few, if you count the extra days we work in June or August) is going to get every kid to pass...
when in reality it's going to take a lot more then just having us work some extra days....

Honestly, you all get off a LOT more days than many southern schools. Last year I have 2 days at Thanksgiving, a Week at Christmas (the 2nd was a work day), 3 days at Easter (Thursday, Friday, Monday) and Memorial Day.
No Columbus Day, Veterans Day, MLK Jr. Day, President's Day, let alone a week in Feb, Jewish Holidays, nothing. And we only got out like a week earlier.
Quit griping 
Trust me I would have rather had a few extra days off and gotten out later... I was about pulling my hair out without a day off from Winter/Holiday Break to Spring Break in Mid-April. Yeah, we had work days, but no actual days off.

I thought all of us had off, city and long island.... Dont you usually get Veterans Day off when it falls on a regular weekday??
It is built into the calendar of days we have off.. Therefore if it falls on A Saturday, we have off on Friday, if it falls on a Sunday we would have off on Monday....
