teaching and doctorates

has anyone gotten one for the sake of making more money?

the thought of pursuing a doctorate has crossed my mind, but for now, solely for making more money. perhpas in the future i would use it for some type of administrative position.

i dont know how much it would cost me and how much time of my life it would take up.

any opinions, experiences, etc?

Re: teaching and doctorates

I think many of us take classes just for the salary increase. I will be working on my +30 little by little for the pay increase more that anything else, so Im sure some have done doctorate for this reason as well, honestly, DH has his doctorate and I would never put myself through that LOL

If you work on LI I think it pays off niy in NYC i feel like the increase isnt much more that +30

I was just looking at this today at work...

The salary differential between a Masters and a Doctorate for NYC is only $1500.

Re: teaching and doctorates

my district doesn't pay all that much for higher degrees. It pays some but not a major increase. I used to think about doing it but now that I have a child, maybe when he's grown....

Re: teaching and doctorates

I'm working on my doctorate, but not for the differential.

PhD is only $1500 more than MA+60 in my district.

TOTALLY not worth it for the money. The amount of work, time and dedication to finish the doctorate is unbelievable.

If you just want the money, take CITE classes, or online classes that your district approves.

you don't even need a doctorate....all you need is MA+30 to be at the highest step in the city. The + 30 can be any type of credits.
