Teaching and Maternity Leave

How does maternity leave work for teachers? I know you get 6 weeks for regular birth and 8 weeks for a C-Section, but how do they count the weeks?

Just say I have my baby in March and then we have off a week for Spring Break in April, do I count that week as part of my 6 weeks or does it not count because school is closed?

Can someone please help?

Thank you so much!!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was wondering about this too....I think the answer is yes, they do count it, but I'm not sure---I was also wondering, if a vacation falls during this time, does that go against your sick days---because all teachers are off...

As far as I know, the holiday weeks don't count as part of your 6 or 8 weeks, but it might be different depending on your district.

Re: Teaching and Maternity Leave

I'm due in Dec. The X-mas break and Feb. break do not count against my sick time. Its a nice added bonus for having a winter baby, I guess. Even if there are snow days, they also won't count against your sick time. However, this is different if you are on FMLA after your 6 or 8 weeks. In my district, you only get paid for what is in your accumulated sick bank. Again, vacations, snow days are not counted against your bank.

This is the same for me too. After I use my sick days FMLA takes affect for 12 weeks and vacation days count then.
