What grade do you teach?
For the i- I always like doing alphabet cards and teaching kids a picture cue- a apple "aaaa" or i itchy "iii" and so on. In order to spell a simple word like nut, kids need to be able to hear the sounds in the word, know which letters make the sounds and know how to write each letter. Do you know where the breakdown is- or is it all of the above?

You can also try a tactile approach by writing the letters on sandpaper and having them trace it..someone else said that animals or any other topic of interest helped her child remember the letters/sounds...

what word study program do you use>? we use fundations. it is greart. I have 2 kids who are the same way, but I coteach so during word study one of us is working 1-1 with them.
you will have to do a lot of repeition with them. I usually sit down with them and just review sounds. I have a sheet from fundations that they can point to the letter of the sound they hear or can look at before writing the letter down. It has the picture on it to remind them of the sound it makes.

I agree. I'm not sure what grade you teach, but kids with STM issues respond well to fundations bc you are constantly drilling sounds with them. Towards the end of Kindergarten and in first great you "tap" out words. Usually starting with CVC words and then work your way up to four and five sounds.
Also it's important to remember vowels are the hardest sounds for little kids to remember, many of them could sound the same (to them) and they also change their sound.

Hi Ladies,
I think Fundations is great,..except my principal will not hear it. I am thinking of asking her to use Voyager since we have the program---although we have Fundations too--- in order to help these kids.
I teach first grade. One child doesn't know the sounds,... the next doesn't know his letters and the little girl can tell you the sound but cannot write it down.
I am thinking about asking for Voyager,... thoughts????

I don't know Voyager but you can still do Fundations type activities without doing Fundations. It's a great program but it's based on research that's been out there a long time.
I would review the letters and sounds everyday. Use cards with the letters and picture keywords. Students can practice saying the letter- keyword- sound. You can also have them practice writing the letters when you say the sound. Any other phonemic awareness activities you can add in would also be great. Good luck!
