The ones less popular tend to be better experiences and overall better sushi. I would steer clear of Morimoto--it's not the kind of sushi I think you are looking for. I would suggest Blue Ribbon--nice place good sushi and cocktials.
My FAVORITE Sushi restuarant though is Ko Sushi on 2nd ave and I think 70th Street. They have the BEST sushi. Not as "she-she" as some of the other ones mentioned, but really really good.
I would also reccoment Haru in Gramercy
