texting q android and iphone
i have an android, my friend has an iphone. i didn't realize that iphones tell you when someone reads your text. (what is the purpose of that anyway? facebook does the same thing).
so if i receive a text from an iphone to my android, does the iphone "know" when I read the text?

No, you don't get a status on texts to an Android.
The read notification can be turned off - mine was turned off from day one! Shit - I don't need people knowing that I'm outright ignoring them. "Yeah, I read the message but I'm busy watching OITNB so I'll reply in five hours!"

not quite true.
I has a droid, Samsung 7. for anyone who has a droid and we text, has same feature and I know if they are responding as it show they are typing.
New feature I take it.
I only like it for my HUBS! 
see if he reads text and how long he answers.

When iPhones messages another iPhones, they are sending a hybrid text/data message which will give you the feature that the text has been read, they are typing, etc...
This is for the application/iPhone specific.
Similar, if i were to use Google Hangouts (android and iphone) and send a data message, a person will see the message has been read and the other person is typing back just like an iphone.
And to the point of a text message, you reply when your ready to reply. If it was that important, the person would call :)

It totally depends on the type of text and the app you and the receiver are using, regardless of the OS. If you send a basic SMS message, it is one way only, and no possible way to know if the person even got it, no less read it.
Some apps have extra features, and most use MMS, which allows pics, audio, etc. If the app has read receipts enabled, and the recipient sends read/receive receipts, then yes, you can tell when they have read it.
You're not getting that type of info from my phone, though...

The only way the "read" feature has worked between iphone and android for me is when I'm using an app and not the actually messaging feature on my phone (like what's app). If I text an android regularly, they can't see when I read my message or not.
