That is such BULL!
So a few weeks ago I get a call from a publishing company saying they have a position I may be interested in. They had my resume on file and the hiring manager was interested in me. I didn't even apply to this position. I was SO HAPPY! I thought maybe this is finally my chance for a job after so long of being unemployed.
I had my interview 2 days later and thought it went well. I emailed to ask what the status was on the position and I got a reply saying after much deliberation they decided to go with a former intern. Seriously? YOU call ME, and then end up going with an intern? Why not just hire the intern at the beginning and not crush my hopes of finally getting a job?
I am so mad.

Sounds like they were looking for a back up in case the intern didn't accept.

I believe they HAVE TO advertise all jobs. So now, officially they interviewed someone from the outside and then they can hire someone internally.
SUCKS!!!

I know its very disheartening. I am recently unemployed and went on two interviews - one was from an open house where they encouraged me to apply because they were really interested. They offered the job to four (!!!) people before someone accepted. I know the first two people who were offered the job, and I know I am more qualified. The person who accepted the job was already working at the company in a different capacity. Why even interview outside the company if you haven't already exhausted all possibilities inside your company? The second job was at the company where I previously worked - also given to someone less qualified than I (and I know there was someone even more qualified than I as well).
Seems like there are a lot of favors, office politics, nepotism, networking, etc going on that you can do nothing about, except hope that it works in your favor at one point.
As for having to post the job, I don't believe that to be true. My old company would often post within the company and choose someone, and never post to outsiders.
Sorry this happened to you - try to put it behind you and move forward.

The only thing is that they never advertised the job. They just called me to interview before they but the ad up.
