The 4 kids next door...

Our old neighbors began the foreclosure process on their house and moved a few months back. Even though the bank owns the house, they are illegally renting it out and keeping the rent money (this was way more informationg that DH and I needed to know but they told us anyway).

So 3 weeks ago a family moved in next door and they have 4 kids (guessing their ages to be 13/14, 9/10, 7/8, and 5/6). Since they have moved in, none of the kid have been in school. I live next to the bus stop and every day I see the kids getting off the bus but never these children. I went over there last week to return the key we had from the previous owns and, in the middle of the afternoon, all of the kids came to the door. And, I just saw the 9/10 year old little boy getting the mail at 11:45am. Why are these kids not in school? Should I call the school district? I asked the previous owners via text message (we were friendly with them) but she never wrote me back and she has not been in touch with me since. These kids are not home schooled because there is never anyone coming to the house. The dad has a work truck and that seems to be the only form of transportation they have. What would you do? As a parent, I can't imagine DS not being in school for an entire month!!! I'm vey uncomfortable with this.

To be honest, I would mind my own business. You don't know their situation, you don't even know them, KWIM?

this is what I was thinking because I saw the kids getting off the bus. But they've been there for 3 weeks and have been home everyday. I've seen them outside on the front lawn and playing in the backyard.

Re: The 4 kids next door...

The mother may be doing the home schooling or maybe she hasn't registered them in the district yet.

I wouldn't get involved though.

I agree.

But, OP, aren't you a mandated reporter? Do you have to say something?

Crashing-

She may be in the process of registering them if she is new to the school district, especially if they are not her biological children and she has temporary custody or something.

My mom had to do this with my cousin and it took a couple of weeks to get her into the school. She needed court documents that the court wouldn't rush, etc.

Re: The 4 kids next door...

Hmm...not sure what I would do. It's not a child abuse case, KWIM? On the other hand, the children should be going to school, that is a law. I'm more curious how they are renting the house after the bank took possession of it...doesnt the bank come in and change the locks?

If the situation really bothers you I would think you should probably call the cops re:the illegal renting of the house and then they would probably address the children not being in school and any other issues there may be.

But if it were me and there were no obvious signs of child abuse or neglect I probably wouldnt get involved although it is a sad situation.

Re: The 4 kids next door...

I think in my original post I mis-spoke about home schooling. I understand that it is possible for the mother to be home schooling them. My apologies.

I don't think I'd like to call the police or anything. My mom suggested that we call the school district to give them a "heads up" but, like someone posted, we really don't know their situation. I suppose I am more upset that our old neighbors told us everything under the sun.....even things we don't want to know. And then they rent the house out to someone, keep the money, and they don't even tell us what the heck is going on. They originally told us that there was a family of 6 interested in renting the house, but they had 7 pit bulls so they decided against it. THANK GOD! While the bank has paid off their mortgage for the foreclosure, it has not been finalized yet. They also filed for bankruptcy, so its still in the court at this point. I'm not really sure why the house is still in their name, but they told us that they are not supposed to be living there. They also told us that they are renting the house and are keeping the money.

My guess is the foreclosure owners didn't message you back because she's afraid you'll report her.

I agree that the mother may be homeschooling in which case that can be done at anytime during the course of the day/night, right?

If you're a mandated report, your obligation is clear. I'm not so I probably wouldn't report her to the school district unless I thought there was a clear case of neglect.

On the other hand, a bank foreclosure with tenants that are illegally renting is completely your business. If you're not comfortable with that, by all means report them to the town.

If the house is in their name still, they can legally rent out the home and not make the mortgage payments. People do it everyday. Obviously unethical, but not illegal.

Why don't you attempt to make friends with them and find out the situation?

If the homeowner's filed BK, chances are the bank has yet to get the automatic stay lifted to proceed with the actual sale of the property at public auction.

If the bank did in fact own the house (it would be boarded up), but they would most likely have to go to Court to evict the people that are currently living in it. So, I am inclined to believe the bank does not own the property YET if you just got new neighbors 3 weeks ago.

I think this is a case of MYOB. As long as they aren't disturbing me or my life in anyway, I would stay out of it.
