I knew it was a good fare on wed but just wasn't ready to buy yet and now I'm kicking myself. How could it fluctuate that much in 2 days? I bought tix for a Jan trip super duper early and those rates have only fluctuated a few bucks since then. Airline is United btw. I set up a Kayak alert now- but I'm wondering if I can kiss that rate from wed goodbye.
Not that my airfare update is sooo interesting, lol but-
So it went back down half way. I did a $20 "fare-lock" for 7 days. I figured if the price went up then I was locked in (you lose the $20 though b/c it doesn't apply towards the fare purchase) and if the price went down even more then I would book that lower fare.
The next day the price dropped even further than the original low price. I booked it and basically lost my $20 but I'm okay with that b/c even with that, I still paid $10 less than the fare that I originally thought was lost forever.
FYI there is also a $10 72 hour lock but I wanted a bigger range of dates to look at (although I didn't need it b/c it was only the next day that it did drop again).
I know United also does a voucher refund but we are doing 2 big trips next year and a possible third where United doesn't fly. I just feel like that's almost worthless to me- I was happier to gamble the extra $20 on the lock.
ETA I also looked at the seating chart to see that the flight was more than half full even though this trip is 6 months away.

Ugh, that's what I hate about booking airfare. When I went to Italy (May 2011), the flight I was originally looking at went from the 800s to 1200s in one day! I changed my days to get a different flight in the 800s. But that original flight (and the one I booked)kept going up to $1600+.
This year I booked airfare to Cancun (for August) in the 700s and it dropped at least $100 after we booked.
So you never know which way airfare will go. Does United offer you a credit if you book now and it drops? Jet Blue does that but you have to use the credit within a year..still, it's better than nothing.
