The average lifespan of a car?
How long do you keep a car before you go out & get a new one?
Accidents aside...

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
Before I met DH, I had my car 7 years. It hardly had any miles on it, I took LIRR to city for work. It was paid off and in excellent condition. I saw no need to get a new one. As long as your not shelling $$ into repairs, I would keep it for as long as you can.
I lease now and do a 3 year lease.
DH drives a different one every other day

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
As soon as the warrenty expires. That's how long m,y cars usually last. As soon as the warrenty goes, things fall apart!
Right now I have a 99 Jeep. The extended warrenty ended last May and since then we've dealt with a lot of issues.

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
Forgot my own answer. My car is 11 years old this month. What prompted this post was my mother telling me we were going to need a new car soon.
I'm thinking I could fix the one up I have as long as the engine lasts.

I lease now
but my first car last from 1986 to 2000- when it got stolen- it would have lasted longer
but personally- I don't think they make cars to last long anymore-

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
DH believes in keeping a car until it needs repairs that are pretty close the total value of the car. His last car was 10 yrs old and needed $3K worth of work. He went to CarMax and when they offered him $5K for it he decided to get another car.
My FIL is still rocking his 16yr old Lincoln Town Car. He can afford to buy a brand new one but he said he'll drive it until it dies on him.

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
My car is 8 years old; and in great condition body/internal/mechanical wise with 110,000 miles.
But, I do want a new car, just because I want a change. My husband says that I drive too much (50 miles a day) for a new car. I don't think that makes ANY sense; am I supposed to buy the car and just look at it in the driveway?

Accidents aside... Wow it depends on the car. The most I ever had one was for 4 years. (well 2 cars for that long) My Eclipse was a lease & DHs truck is a lease, both for 4 years. Most cars I kept for 2 years, but the least I ever kept a car was 1 week.
I still have my frist car, a 1972 Karmann Ghia, but it does not run for the time being. DH & I are making it my project car once we finish our garage (complete with lift )

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
We try to have one car that is leased (so turn in after 3 years) and one car that is owned and either paid off or close to it. We keep the car that we own for at least 5 years (longer or shorter depending on how many problems/recalls it has had).
I think it can vary a lot from car to car. We had one car that was the first year of a new engine and had all sorts of problems and didn't last long. That same model car the following year had all of those known kinks worked out, so they have lasted a lot longer.

My last car was 7 years old when I sold it and only because my DH got a new job with a company car and his car was brand new.

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
I just donated my first car last summer and it was 15 years old - I had it for 13 years. It still ran OK, but started needing repairs more frequently, so we decided to get a new one.
I plan to drive the new one till it hits the same point. The repairs were still cheaper than a car payment and the insurance got cheaper and cheaper.

Re: The average lifespan of a car?
i drive it until the lease it up or about 5 years if i hadnt leased the car. i will not drive it until it dies, but rather when it is just beginning to show lots of problems. driving it until it dies costs money.
