You buy a bbt (basal body thermometer). You wake up the same time every day...and you take your temperature. Enter the temperature into a charting program like the one on www.fertilityfriend.com. Your data will then be turned into a chart. You will be able to see the thermal shift that marks ovulation.
Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, they have it most public libraries or you can purchase it. It is the handbook and bible to charting :)
www.fertilityfriend.com also has a whole internet guide to charting.
