The calls are coming from inside the house!

We were awakened last night- at 4AM, by at least 2 animals fighting under our bedroom, livingroom, back to our bedroom... My first thought, for some reason, was squirrels. Probably because we have had squirrel issues in our attic.
But this was loud. LIke a dolphin cackle, but you know- obvioiusly not a dolphin.
Do you think we have raccoons under the house? Or do squirrels fight loud and dirty? The more I think about it, they sounded like a loud version of how raccoons talk- like in the Great Outdoors-
In any case, does anyone have someone they can recommend to take care of this? Or any idea on how much this will cost us?
Access is so limited to our crawl space- it's only about 12" in places- a human can not get down there- how will they get these things out?
I am freaking out. They can't stay- the dog is going nuts, and starting to scratch the carpet up.

I'm not sure who to call, but they would probably set traps for the animals and then let them go in a park somewhere. GL!

I don't have someone to recommend but, it does sound like raccoons.

It's the time of year they usually hibernate and beneath your house sounds nice and toasty warm, as well as safe!

We had a raccoon that used to hibernate under our deck by the dryer vent when I was growing up (right by our little basement window). My mom called a trapper and they set a have a heart trap with a jelly donut as bait.

Thanks ladies!
Are raccoons like squirrells, where they need ot be dropped off 30 miles away or they'll come back? I would prefer to have this done humanely, but I know that in the case of squirrells, that's almost never the case.
Do you think a trapper would be able to find where they came in?

They are creatures of habit and this might not be the first winter they have picked this spot to hibernate.

A trapper should be able to locate where they came in so you can plug it up once they've vacated.

Good luck!

In my old apartment complex, we had racoons in our ceiling!! Chat Icon We were the bottom unit and they got in through a hole outside. They would constantly fight with each other and its a low growl and higher sounding screeching sound. It's hard to explain. It's so scary-- those things are nasty and mean animals.

It sounds like raccoons to me. I was told by STAR foundation that unfortunately because of the rabies outbreak on LI if you have someone trap them they will euthanize them.

Re: The calls are coming from inside the house!

I would love to give you my dad's number because he deals alot with this at his house because he lives on the north shore by the water and they are supposedly attracted to water. I don't believe that he uses a very pc method to get rid of them (he grew up on a farm in Italy and does not feel warm and mushy about animals), but he said he doesn't want to call the ASPCA because he feels like they trap them and then drive away, but come back and drop them off at the house again so they can justify their jobs!!!! My father - he cracks me up. When I stay at my parents house I can hear them at night by the water and when they fight they sound like two women screaming. They clean their paws on the steps of the pool and have ripped my parents very expensive pool cover. My dad has a vendetta against them!

seriously-
so now my husband plans to go to Home Depot and buy or rent a trap, catch the bugger himself and kill it. I know this will be difficult for him, though.

We do live right by the water- and have had them in our yard before- they are nasty, but so cute looking in the face.
In any case- does anyone have any idea what it would cost to have an exterminator come and trap/ kill these bastards?
BC I would prefer to save my husband the heartbreak of drowning them in a garbage pail.

My Italian FIL does this. Not habitually for fun or anything- but they had a real bad squirrel issue.

By law, anyone who you call in to rid you of your racoons must destroy them. It is against the law to catch them and relocate them. My cousin had to have it done, and the guy told them they are under very strict guidelines and could lose their license if they tried to let them out.

we had a similar issue it was squirrels in our crawl space attic n they literally would run through ceiling from the family room, den, and kitchen.......we didn't know what they were at first so we called terminix........290$ later he said they were squirrels and showed us a hole in the siding of the front of the house they would crawl through. so he said no traps just wake up early in the am and cover the hole! ps this am we found the squirrel scratching away at the hole tryin to get in......dh feels bad and was thinking about opening the hole.......Chat Icon "r u crazy" he came to his senses! so we're good at this point. they say moth balls keep squirrels away.....if its racoons i think u may have to call the town for that!

That's interesting. I never heard that before.

As the owner or horses who live outside, euthanizing racoons humanely wouldn't bother me at all. Rabies is a BIG deal.

Yeah- distemper is rampant this year too, because of the overpopulation.
I don't mind that they will have to die, I just feel terrible for my husband to have to do it.

PLEASE be sure he's safe. He does NOT want a bite or scratch from a raccoon -- they could be infected with so many things. Chat Icon
