Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
WE HAD A GUY WHO LIVED ACROSS THE STREET FROM US WHO WAS FROM TEXAS--HIS NAME: JIM-BOB.
HE HAD A CONFEDERATE FLAG HANGING ON THE FENCE AND WOULD COME OUTSIDE AND SCREAM "YEE HAW" EVERY MORNING.
HE DIDN'T LAST LONG AND MOVED BACK TO TEXAS.
THE ONLY REASON HE LIVED HERE FOR A FEW WAS BECAUSE HIM AND HIS WIFE WERE LIVING WITH HER BROTHER.
NICE MAN--BUT SO GLAD TO SEE HIM GO. THE YEE HAW WAS GETTING TO ME

I whole-heartedly believe that many people (especially the younger ones) see the Confederate Flag only as a symbol of Southern Pride.
I really never thought of the Klan connection, though--it has me thinking...
I think the Confederate Flag represents a state of mind and a desired "way of life", as well as pride, for some people... Esp. the one Goldi posted. It's a baffling thought that I will never quite be able to wrap my brain around...

Do you think a person could wave a Confederate flag without an association to the Klan? There HAS to be people who are simply proud to be from the south without that negative connotation.
Yes, I live in VA where the Southern Brotherhood of the Confederacy is alive and well. (I'm serious. This is an actual social/historical group) I was bewildered beyond all reason as to what their goals were as an organization, then learned it was more about keeping memories alive of those who fought before them. Unfortuantely there are other negative connotations that are hard to separate. I still don't know what the "we will rise again" is all about...and I still don't like seeing the flag. We are 1 country now, I see it as not very patriotic. But I respect peoples right to fly it as a tribute to their heritage.

Having lived in the south and known many, many NON-racist people who flew the Confederate flag - yes. It's difficult for me to wrap my head around for sure -- b/c I was raised to view it with a very different understanding (and do personally think racism first when I see that flag). However, I do not think everyone who flies a Confederate flag is a racist or associated with the Klan. I'd venture to say most people who fly the Confederate flat are not associated with the Klan.
That said, I find it entirely weird to see them up North... and I personally have a very difficult time disassociating it from racism.

BUt I think THAT flag is a lot different than a "Proud NYer" sticker
To us, yes, it is a lot different.
But to many people from the south, it is exactly the same - a "Proud Southerner" symbol.

People who fly this flag - what exactly are they hoping for in the "south rising again?" The only thing I can think of is that they want slavery back and civil rights abolished. Or is there some other issue that they are behind with the waving of the confederate flag?

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
Start up your flames.... cause here I go.
I agree with most of you. As a Texan, though I never would have seen it as a race thing. Its just ‘different’ to see up here in ‘Yankee territory’.
Still it’s just a flag and just a thought.
I have never flown one, nor am I itching to. People don’t know I’m from the ‘south’ since I have no accent and most Texans don’t consider themselves from the ‘south’ to begin with. South to me is Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, etc.
Still I have seen those flags here and in the south and by both races (white/black) so being curious I asked why. What I got mostly was they want the pride back. Most are taught that although yes, the civil war was about slaves it had more to do with voting and electoral delegates as well as taxes. The south was a lush and prosperous place before the war and was devastated afterwards (not just saying that they lost their (lets say workers)).
Some of the old foggies want the South to rise up and reclaim their glory. Which oddly enough is why most Texans I know don’t want to associate themselves with the south, since most Texans feel Texas is a country on its own anyway and hardly needs the “War of Northern Aggression” to make things worse.
Still most southern folks don’t have same reaction to Yankee stuff as Yankees do to southern stuff. If anything we feel more pride in our own sense of community. You always speak of the South as a whole and Yankees are still mostly associated with NY area (NY, NJ, CT) and we don’t consider PA as a Yankee state in the same degree as NY.
To each their own, I guess.
It could be worse… lets not start on the old Georgia state flag drama….
To reiterate, I am not flaming NY. It’s got qualities or I’d have left it. I am not supporting slaving (cuz duh that’s stupid). I am not supporting bring back the war (again, stupid). I agree it’s strange to see, but hey we have hanging sacks of balls on SUV’s here too that include “baby on board” tags. I think we all just need to get along. If you don’t like it, don’t look?? I think there are more offensive things out in our world today.
(God I hope I said that right…) Ok, FLAME ON!

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me
I think the flag is one thing. A flag is a symbol of pride, of your heritage, of your land, your people, and for the south, it is like a different land, a different history, a different people.
However, the emblem ON the flag...well, that's just a slap in the face!

Re: The closest to potential drama you will ever see from me (VERY funny update)
Ok...here's a really interesting spin on the flag i found.
"Black Men say Rebel flag flies for freedom
For an hour, the Confederate battle flag flew over the former site of the Eight Flags Display on U.S. 90.
Dressed in Confederate gray, a black man named Anthony Hervey marched with the banner clutched in his hands. His brother, Harry, accompanied him, wearing jeans and a Robert E. Lee T-shirt.
Hervey's devotion to the flag began when he discovered that a great-great-uncle, James Hervey, was a black American who fought for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. James Hervey served in the Army of Mississippi and was killed at the battle of Shiloh.
Further research helped Hervey discover records of at least 100,000 black Confederates who fought in the war.
"I am marching for freedom," Hervey said. "The battle flag stands for freedom and states' rights. The U.S. flag is the flag of slavery. It flew over 100 years of slavery, and Native Americans were annihilated under that flag."
For his march, Hervey chose the site where a Confederate flag once stood, one of eight representing entities that have governed the Coast. Harrison County removed the flags because of protests over the Confederate flag, a racist symbol to many, flying on the public beach.
Hervey's crusade also has taken him to Jackson. In the Jackson City Council chambers June 13, Hervey showed up wearing his battle grays, wrapped in the flag. A scuffle erupted between a Jackson man, who said he supported Hervey, and a city councilman who exchanged words, according to published reports. Hervey was not involved in the shoving match.
Hervey sees a correlation between the past and today's controversies over the flag.
"We currently live under a psychological form of reconstruction," he said. "Whites are made to feel guilty for sins of their ancestors, and blacks are made to feel downtrodden. This keeps all of us from communicating. The political correctness of today is killing the pride of the people."
Hervey is the founder of the Black Confederate Soldier Foundation, an Oxford-based, not-for-profit organization. Its stated mission is to foster new thought on the Civil War. Claims that the Confederate flag is a racist symbol are, to the group, part of a nonissue. Black Confederates, the group says, have been misrepresented in historical texts.
Hervey wants to build a memorial that will include the names of the black Confederates who fought and died in the War Between the States.
As the Hervey brothers continued their march, shouts of support and anger could be heard from passing motorists. A group of young black men hanging from car windows shouted at the pair. Hervey instructed his brother to look forward "like a true soldier."
"Don't even look at them," Hervey said, citing the young men's behavior as an example of black psychology today.
"They will yell a lot and want you to confront them, but they will not do anything," Hervey said.
"I found it appalling what happened in South Carolina, and I'm afraid this is going to happen in Mississippi." Hervey said. "We seek only to correct the errors in history - to right the wrongs done to the memories of these brave soldiers."

southerners DEFINITELY could be proud of their culture w/o an association with the klan... but I think THOSE southerners don't wave the confederate flag.
I agree with this. My first thought was this that is a racist symbol. Maybe its not anymore, but that is my first instinct. I would definitely be taken aback if I saw one on a neighbors house.

I love Texas - particularly Dallas where we have a lot of family who are transplanted New Yorkers from the Bronx. We are very comfortable there and would consider moving there should either one of us have a job opportunity that we couldn't find in NY. Not sure how long it would last since DH likes the beach and Dallas is nowhere near water.

MY Dh is from TN. and I showed him this and he goes "Hell yeah" and starts to laugh..
ETA: after reading through the whole post and the Klan comments I feel that I should add that Dh only thinks of it as a Southern pride kind of thing.
