The cost for the American Girl Dolls...

A co-worker of mine just bought one and it's a little baby with a onesie and a bottle. It was $50.00 I don't mean to sound cheap but that's ridiculous. 50 beans for a little baby doll.

They have similiar,(not the same I know) but similiar ones in toys r us for cheaper. But I know I know this is the "american girl" doll. You are only paying for the name.

yes ur paying for the name but they are so cute and well made. How about this getting those dolls and not being able to play with them just look at them through the box!! That is what happened to me! But now I have so many collectable dolls for when I have children but back then I was so upset!

Eh, I don't disagree with what you are saying .. but every generation there is ALWAYS SOME TOY that little boys and girls just HAVE to HAVE (and no substitute will make do)

They are overpriced because they are in HUGE demand , and its the current 'fad'

If you had a daughter, unfortunately you'd be running out there and buying it for her as well .. Chat Icon I know I would!!

But for that price I can understand if they were the "shelf dolls" like we had. I've actually seen girls drag the American Girl dolls around to the point that they are falling apart. I mean a $100 doll being dragged around... Chat Icon I had my "shelf dolls" (usually dressed in ethnic costimes from around the world) and my "drag on the floor, take into the bath and spill stuff on" dolls.

My niece has one and she adores it. I know they are expensive, but they are beautiful dolls. I was a huge doll girl, and I would have loved to have one when I was a kid.

Re: The cost for the American Girl Dolls...

I've been collecting the American Girls since I was 8, and I have them all with the exception of Marisol (who is the current limited edition only available till the end of this year!!!! Chat Icon ) and Nellie (Samantha's Best friend). They've been a fad for a LONG time now, as tomorrow is the 17th anniversary of me receiving my first one - Samantha.

I don't think the bitty babies are worth $50, as cute as they are. But I do feel that the actual American Girls are well worth the money. They teach the girls about history, and they're little girl dolls instead of being grown ups. I read an article where a mother commented on how little girls are always in such a hurry to grow up - these dolls are supposed to be 9 and 10 years old, and so encourage girls to be girls.

I'm right there with you!! My mom has been a collector for years as well-- and she started with Samantha too!! It is very true that the girls come with the story behind them- ususally a historical one-- and these are GIRLS. So I'd rather buy my daughter one knowing that it is a girl, and that she might learn something--- and not a Barbie- which is totally unrealisitic un-proportioned babe who is from Malibu and lives in a dream house.

Re: The cost for the American Girl Dolls...

My dd is turning 7 and my sister was going to get her one but she called me the other day and said she needs to do the "motherly" thing and get her clothes. I said that was fine. She is getting older and she would probably just put it in her room and never play with it. She needs the clothes MUCH more than an $80 doll. If she was 4 or 5, then maybe she would get better use with it.

Re: The cost for the American Girl Dolls...

My Niece has wanted one in THE WORST way...so, for her birthdya, all of her uncles and aunts (4 of us) gave her 30.00....and some other family memebers gave her a little bit of money, and its for her Doll..She gets to go to the city and pick it out....right down to the glasses she wants her to have...and eat luch in the cafe, and pay for her doll herself...

I think the dolls are adorable, and if I was a little girl, I would want one too!Chat Icon
