The drunk driving NEEDS to stop

What can we - as a society do about this? Is there an answer - something we can do to prevent this from happening because obviously whatever they are doing is NOT working in the slightest bit!

I am sick to my stomach reading every single day about someone else who was killed by a drunk driver!

When are people going to learn?

And, really - what in the hell can we do about this? It's getting out of control - and I'm honestly at the point where I am scared to be on the road with my son at night.

There HAS got to be a solution.

I will end this by saying (so that I do not come off looking like a complete hypocrite to anyone who knows) that I did get arrested over 10 years ago for a DUI - I was young - and so so so so stupid. I didn't realize what I was doing - and I haven't had a drink - and drove since that day. I learned my lesson - and thank god I didn't have to learn the hard way by hurting someone - but what about all of these other people who have no idea?!

Re: The drunk driving NEEDS to stop

it's the whole "that could never happen to me" frame of mind

Unfortunately, unless it takes the life of a friend or loved one, people will never see the permanant impact it has on lives all around.

The consequences must be harsher. You get caught - you lose your license. No second chances. No "you can drive to and from work" crap. One strike you are out.

In order to get your license make it a requirement that you attend a seminar that shows the dangers of drunk driving - films, personal stories, meet with MADD type organizations, etc.

I know what you mean. I think the increase in drunk driving is due to people struggling in our terrible economy. It's so scary.

ITA. Or even you lose your license and spend a year in jail. Automatically. And become a felon. And you must report that to every future employer you ever have. If there aren't enough jobs and opportunities to go around, why not deprive those who don't seem to care about anyone but themselves?
We've been talking about CHANGE in politics and the law. Wouldn't this be a GREAT one?
