the Mayan calendar didn't have leap years - there have been 514 since the leap year was created.
if we'd stuck with the Mayan calendar, we would be toward the end of 2013 - and we're still alive.
I was just going to post this.
The Mayan calendars didn't need Leap Years. Their calendar(s) are so different than ours that they didn't need them. The end of their calendar just happens to land on the date we call 12/21/2012, but it's always been the same date for them. It's our calendar that has changed, not theirs.
However, the point is, we don't panic every time OUR calendar ends on Dec. 31st. The calendar picks up again on Jan 1st again. Exactly the same as the Mayan calendar. Their long count calendar just happens to be really long. It's still just a cycling calendar that starts over when it's completed it's cycle.

What the Mayans didn't say is if the power goes out in my house a THIRD time this month.. then that is when the world will end officially .. because I will scream so loud I'll throw the earth off it's rotation.

There are millions, probably billions of people in the world who are not experiencing any of the things that you mentioned. We are one small area of the world that has been having a rough go of it.
Also, I think you are confusing a few "prophecies." I think the 12/21/12 thing is the end of the Mayan calendar, while the weather disturbances and political upheaval are discussed in revelations, in the Christian bible.
This!!!
Although it has crossed my mind I don't really think the world is going to end, the same way it didn't end on 5/21/11 (remember that whole Harold Camping nonsense! Lol). It says in the bible that no one knows the day nor the hour. I think our weather patterns are wacky but it really is due to global warming, not some phrophecy about the end of days. Like another poster said the weather really isn't that unusual if you consider past storms as a whole.
Plus if the world is really going to end, no one is going to stop it anyway so why worry. I'm going to live each day as if it were my last!!!!!!!

Re: The end of the world.
The past week has really gotten me thinking about this at least. Tsunami warnings in Hawaii before Sandy then Sandy then a Nor' Easter and then an Earthquake off of Central America oh and a small quake in NJ somewhere in there.
I remember a few years ago I had a student who was obsessed with the end of the world. He asked me what I was going to do that day, I said call in sick!
