The Great Cow Harbor 10K Run
Has anyone done this before? It's in September in Northport. Since I'll have 2 months to train, I signed up for it. Just curious to know if anyone has done it or will be doing it.

No but I heard it's a great fun (one of the best on LI). I don't think I can handle a 10k yet or else I would sign up with you!

Hi,
I've done this race the past 2 years and love it. There are a couple of hills, but it's a great course with lots of community support.

i'm doing it this year and did it a few years ago. the james street hill is killer so make sure to do some hill specific training. other than that it's a really nice race. well run, good crowd support.

Great race, just beware there is a big hill in the first mile, after that it's a great run!

It's a goal in life. James Street is steep!!! Really steep. It's in the middle and you are going UP it. Here's a map.
If you can, drive the route.

Great race. I haven't done it in a few years but I always liked it. As PP stated, the hill is tough. Some people just walk it rather than go all out & be spent the rest of the race.

Thanks everyone. I wasn't aware of the hill so I'll definitely incorporate it into my training. I figure I have 9 weeks to train for it and I'm going to follow the Hal Higdon training schedule for 10K's. Any other advice is greatly appreciated. I'm really looking forward to it now!

Yes! I have done it almost every year since 1998!! I LOVE it! The Northport Running Club is great and the town makes it a fun fun race. It's actually very respected race as it's a qualifying race for other elite races.
It is challenging though. The first mile is down hill and kind of messes with you, as miles 2-5 are uphill. The last mile is a great downhill in through town in Main Street.
I love that it's a staggered start, so you get to run people with the same pace as you and you get a more accurate race time, since you don't have to wait a minute to finally be able to cross the start line.
I'll be there this year! I'm signed up already!
