The one-hour GD test... How much do you have to drink/what's it like?

I'm going tomorrow morning for the GD test, 1 hour. They are making me drink the liquid there.

How big is the drink? Is it nasty? What does it taste like?

To me it tastest like orange carbonated drink. You drink the whole thing in a certain number of minutes and then wait one hr to get your blood drawn

it's small and honestly - TO ME it tasted like watered down orange soda. it was NOT bad.

Just be sure to not have anything to eat or drink before. My OB told me I could have a light breakfast and I completely spaced, had OJ with my oatmeal and ended up flunking and had to do the three hour. PITA. My SIL told me that even something as small as a raisin can throw off the results.

You'll go and they will give you this orange drink. It tastes like flat orange soda. It's not a whole lot to drink, they gave me a cup of it, not the whole bottle. Then you sit there for an hour and then they will draw your blood.

It's Prob about 6oz of liquid if I remember correctly...

I hated it.... It was soooooooooooooo sweet!

The gave me a lemon-lime one that I got to take home. Was told only to drink half of it and it tastes better cold. Not a lot at all and it tastes like a flat, suggary soda.

i was told specifically NOT to fast. just avoid carby items the evening before.

this is one of those things that will be debated over and over, but if you have GD, you'll fail and if you don't, you'll pass....fasting or not doesn't make a big difference...but ALWAYS do what your doc says - if they said fast, then fast....if they didn't - then DO NOT.

Good luck Beth! I thought the drink was pretty gross, but I don't like soda or most juices. If you don't mind a really sweet orange drink, you'll be fine.

The fast/no fast rule depends on the lab and/or doctor. I was told not to eat anything after midnight. I had it done at Quest. They actually turned a woman away that day who ate breakfast before the test. Just check the rules at the place where you're taking the test. I was actually given different advice at my doctor's office and I'm glad I followed up with Quest.

I have mine tomorrow too. Honestly it depends on your OB to the test prep - some have you eat something that day (esp if it is later in the day) others have you do it in the morning and fast. I think even if you do eat for a later test that you are supposed to fast for 2-3 hours before the test and some places also say no water.

There are I think 3 flavors - but you probably won't get a choice. I had orange and cola flavors - but was told when asked at one of the tests (I did the 1 hour twice last pregnancy b/c I have PCOS - and the three hour - but luckily didn't have GD) NOT to take the lemon/lime one that it was nasty. The cola and the orange were fine. Honestly it is like soda without the bubbles but a little sweeter.

I did not fast last time, and failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 hour

you bet your *** I am fasting this time

it's typically done between 26 & 28 weeks...

it's REALLY not as bad as complained about. I rather not LIKED the taste, but didn't mind it at all... As Christine said - the taste of OTHER things to drink medically are MUCH MUCH worse...

For me - the 1 hour was a nightmare, i didn't feel good for the rest of the day after that test... The 3 hour - i felt 100% FINE and watched a part of a season of the Office on DVD...it was a cake walk...(other than getting stabbed 4 times).

Ok, phew

I had to have a barium swallow before, where they make you drink this nasty chalky stuff, a ton of it in a short amount of time, and then some carbonated drink which makes you want to throw it up but you can't so they can see the insides when they x-ray you....

so as long as it doesnt taste like that, PHEW!
