The Pediatrician said my 6 week old DS has a heart murmur!! Anyone experience this, or know about it - I'm trying not to freak out

So at today's well-baby visit, our new pediatrician said she heard a heart murmur. He is 6 weeks old. I'm trying not to freak out but its a little hard not to. I'm wondering why our other ped never heard it or said anything and why it wasn't detected at the hospital when he was born. The fact that it wasn't is so upsetting!

Our appointment with a pediatric cardiologist isn't until next friday and i'm not sure how i'll make it until then. We've had enough scares and drama since delivery (formula issues, breastfeeding failure on my part, baby blues, a choking episode, etc), I really thought that we were done but no, instead the worry goes on. I'm not sure how much more I can take.

Anyone know anything about heart murmurs or have a DC that has a murmur?

Thanks.

I'm not a doctor, but it could just be a little underdeveloped.
I'm sure if it was something really to worry about you'd be in the hospital on a monitor.

I had a heart murmer when I was little - maybe 3-8 = I just outgrew it.

How did the new ped react when he heard it? It could just be a cover your azz thing.

Don't Panic.

Noah has a heart murmur. And I lost it when they referred me to a cardiologist.

Evidently there are many things that can cause it. Most are innocent/functional heart murmurs (this is the case with Noah). It can be because they have a thin chest wall or some other non-dangerous thing.

My nephew also has a murmur. In his case it indicated a small hole in his heart. He was monitered every year for a while. It closed on it's own with no surgery or medication needed.

It's HARD not to jump to the worst case scenario - but just breathe.

And don't Google. Let the doctors do their job.

We went through the exact same thing, including the early month feeding problems and stresses. It scared me half to death and turned out to be nothing.

First of all: Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Try not to worry. In all likelihood, it is just a normal murmur that is audible because their chest wall is so thin and the heart is so close to the surface. A huge percentage of newborns have this to some extent.

My ped was (over)cautious and made us go get a heart sonogram. It was sheer hell because DD was upset and crying and they couldn't get the picture they needed and that just prolonged the experience. In the end, it was found to be totally normal and nobody has ever mentioned it since.

Was DS really really sleepy at his appt? With DD, the reason they heard it was because she was out COLD on the exam table. She had been at least half awake all the other times, including at the hospital. The cardiologist said that was probably why it was even noticeable, because there was NO other movement to create a background noise to muffle it.

I was told that if they could still detect something at 6 months, further testing may be required. If there were never any abnormalities found on your sonos before DS was born and he isn't having any problems breathing, gaining weight, etc., then most likely it is nothing Chat Icon

ITA I many kids develop heart murmur at some point or it's detected when they are first born and in most cases it's really nothing serious. I had a hole in my heart when I was born and it healed on it's own within months.

DS has a heart murmur that was detected at his 1 month appointment. The doctor said it was very slight so that's probably why it was not previously detected. As a precaution, they sent us to a cardiologist to have an EKG and sonogram done. It turned out that it is a transitional or innocent murmur and is no cause for concern. We have to repeat the tests in a year to see if it is still there.

I understand your concern because I was the same way. Everything I came across online pointed to the fact that these murmurs are noting to worry about.

Same with my DS.....He has a tiny murmur that is not visable on any of the testing they did (EKG or Echo) but can be heard. They told me that it should close. We go back in Jan. for a 1 yr. appt. and to see if it closed.

I have a heart murmur due to a hole, it was supposed to close on its own but never did.

It hasn't really been a big deal in my life at all.

I went once a year to have it checked as a child which was just an EKG, and less often now that I'm older.

As a precaution, I would take penicillin before & after any situation where I knew I would bleed ... especially dental work. That part would have sucked much less if I had learned to swallow a pill before I turned 18. Liquid penicillin tastes like azzzz! Chat Icon

The last time I went to my internist he said that some doctors are no longer recommending taking penicillin for dental appointments, so just go with whatever your docs recommend for your DC.

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them as best as I can.

My brother was born with a heart murmer. It finally closed when he was 7 years old. He is fine. He played football in high school. He is fine. The only thing was that he had to get a check up every year to see if it closed.

Both my DS's were born with heart murmurs, that were detected while I was pregnant. Once born, we took them to the ped cardiologist. They believe they are both holes. With my first DS, it is considered innocent. We've gone twice so far, and will go once more to see if it closes up on it's own. With my second DS, it is also innocent, but he also has an extra blood vessel to his heart, causing the heart to work harder. We will continue to follow up.

It is horrible to hear these things, and go through the testing, but we've been told it is usually innocent.

Feel free to FM me - we've been to the ped cardio a bunch of times! Chat Icon

I've had a heart murmur my whole life. I am perfectly fine and did everything normal kids did!

I go once a year for a checkup with a cardiologist and I take antibiotics before dental visits. I have forgotten to do this at times, and again I'm fine.

Try not to worry! I know its easier said then done, but don't jump the gun!

DS #1 has a heart murmur so I can empathize with what you're feeling. We went to a ped cardiologist and he determined it was not serious. It was a huge relief to hear those words because I was automatically thinking the worst.

I actually developed a murmur while pregnant with DS #2 which I had no idea could happen.

Hang in there. You'll get through this and I'll be keeping you and your DS in my prayers. Chat Icon

I have a heart murmur and can recomment an excellent ped. cardiologist out of St. Francis if you would like. I also brought DS there when he was an infant.

Most heart murmurs are harmless and some dont even ever know they have one. I wouldnt worry too much right now Chat Icon Chat Icon

My ds had one. It was detected at birth because he had several holes in his heart. It is so scary when you first learn about it. The Dr's told me that most of the time they go away. When I brought him back to the cardio at 18 months everything looked good. Holes closed and murmur was gone. They did say that the murmur could come back around the ages of 6 or 7 and then again around 12 or 13.
I also wanted to add that ds was born early and had some other complications so that may be why the noticed it so early. I hope everything goes weell for you and dc.
