This is based on what I found searching on the net. It seems like you're responsible for fixing or cleaning up whatever is in your yard. Insurance would cover damage, such as roof damage where a tree fell on the house, but it doesn't cover removing a fallen tree if there is no damage. The exception would be if it was due to proven negligence. If you can show that you had concerns about a neighbors tree and had notified them of such then you may be able to contact their insurance company for reimbursement. You would need solid proof, such as having had professional opinions of the weakness to the tree, notification to your neighbor via certified letters, etc.

Re: The pleasures of being a homeowner... With questions...
We just had a huge tree come down about an hour ago in the street. We were lucky that it missed all the power lines and phone lines. The fire dept. came and cleared the road but we have a huge tree in our yard, pushing our mailbox over, and lots of additional huge limbs in the neighbors yard.

if there is no damage to your home, car or fence, I would just try to cut it up myself or talk with your neighbor about them helping to pay for someone to cut it up and take it away. GL!

This is way beyond cutting it up ourselves unless we want to go buy a huge chain saw and a dumpster to put it in. It's about a foot in diameter - a huge, branchy red pine.
We have a good neighborhood and neighbors so I won't ask them for anything - it was mostly in the road and the firemen clearing the road pushed half to their side so the road was clear.
We have a neighbor who used to have a tree business and he's got the tools and a truck - he's taken a few smaller trees down for us so I'm going to ask him if he wants the job before I call someone else.

I agree - i think you guys are responsible. this is exactly why last fall i hired a tree company and notified my 2 neighbors that i was curring limbs off trees from their yards that hung over in to my yard. neither of them minded and one actually was home and told my tree guys to cut his tree waaaaay back (way more than i had planned)...with all the storms we have had Im so glad i did. good luck witnh your situation!
