Re: The price of a photo
i think the majority of photographers posting it see it as about valuing documenting life and not focusing on the the little things. Its not about the $500 price tag but its about that the piece of paper isn't just a piece of paper its a precious memory.
This is how I see it - not about spending $500 vs what photo you had personally taken. Its about having the photo in the end.

I'm sorry for your loss, Barb.
Maybe the lesson should just be to spend more time with family and takes LOTS of photos, whatever kind they may be
Thank you!

I think this is exactly the message it should be about - except the letter talked about how the letter writer decided to save the $500 of photos, spent it on other things & now regrets it because she doesn't have the photos & is dying now.
It is about the photos. The lesson I will take from it is to take the photos, be in photos. I'm the biggest offender of my own rule. I may hate the way I look in photos but my kids will look at those photos & see "mom" not "mom who was overweight".

A woman has a few weeks left to live and has learned how precious time is. So she uses some of those rare few moments that she has left to write to her photographer and tell her that she regrets not doing family portraits instead of taking care of herself and having a nice dinner out with her family?
All of the snapshots she has of the real moments throughout their lives will not have the same impact as that last photo session?
It's maudlin and I might be a terrible person but I just don't believe it is real. I think it's a cheap way of getting clients to open their wallets.
I agree that pictures are important. I also think pro photos are worth it with a good photographer. But I don't think you NEED pro photos to make a life that's worth looking back on. I have hundreds of snapshots of my grandparents, parents and sisters.. very few are pro. I cherish them all.
I agree with you. It seems like the photographer is trying to get business, regardless of whether the letter is real or not.

And how you spend your time.
I am not happy with the way I look. I take a lot, a lot of pics of DS when we do fun stuff. I avoid being in pics as much as I can. I just hope he remembers me there but if something was to happen, he won't have many pictures of us together.
Maybe time to either suck it up or do something about it.....
that is me too... makes me think otherwise now too

ITA that something doesn't seem right about this letter. If I was dying, I would be hanging with my kids and taking some pics of us having fun, and they will cherish those forever. Does not make sense she wrote a letter to her photographer.

I hate to sound horrible but I question if this is a true story? Does anyone know if it's true? The skeptic in me doesn't buy it for some reason.

I just wrote this without reading your post! I don't buy it. If I was told I was dying...it still would NOT be too late to take a photo and the LAST person I would write to is a photographer that I cancelled on.
Sounds overly dramatic to me and sounds like a sales pitch to me, like one of those chain emails about this or that, some dramatic story, that ultimately just sounds like a well concocted story.
The line about the news not expected and the cancer has spread so quickly. Just seems odd so many details were left out and just the dramatics were put in. JMO though

I feel exactly the same way! No way is this real: just a nice way to get people to shel out their $500+! Pretty clever move on the photographers part: take that special pro-picture before cancer gets you!
BTW, I think getting a hair cut and a manicure and having a nice diner with family is a pretty awesome way to make memories as well! So there!
ITA. I was really weirded out by this letter and how much people love an repost it on facebook. I definitely think it's fake and a little ridiculous.

Ugghhhh- I shouldn't have read that.
And I feel the same as many others on this thread- I was just thinking the other day how there are like NO pics of me with DD- it's all of her- because I HATE how I look in pics. I was thinking- wow she won't even know what I looked like at this age. Kind of makes you re think things....
I feel the same way!!

But her baby was 2 years old, and you don't remember what your mom looks like at 2 years old. I'm sure she thought it would be comforting for her youngest to see photos of them together.
ETA: And photos when she was TRULY happy, before she knew she had cancer. I could see wanting really nice pictures with my family of the last time I was happy and looking healthy. The pics she would take right before would be when she looked sick.

I am a big photography fan and see much relevance to taking pictures. Having said that, I feel this "letter" does nothing more than what those chain letter email and statuses do, make the reader roll their eyes.
Trying so hard to prove your need only cheapens it in my opinion. I am a firm believer in you get what you pay for, let the work speak for itself.

Why not go out to dinner with your family and hand your camera to the server to snap a photo - then you have both.
It does bring up a point I have stated on here many times before. Get in the photos, people! My mom hated photos and as a result, I have very few photos of her with us when we were young. I have the graduation photos, but the candid, birthday parties, vacations, hanging around type of photos? Only a few. I would have loved to have more. Because of that, I try to get into photos with my son, even if I don't feel like it. Even if I never show them to anyone, he will have them once I am gone.

Exactly. I love professional pictures but some of my favorite pictures are candids I took. If this story is true and the woman really regretted canceling the session I think they could have tried to work something out with the photographer before she died.

Re: The price of a photo
Regardless of who wrote it ... The main point is don't spend the money on your hair and nails spend it on memories ... It could be a trip to Wally world and not pro pics .... This woman paid over 100 dollars on her hair and what does it matter now?
Go out to dinner more ... Go out for ice cream .... Go to Wally world .. Spend your moment making memories that's what I took from it

I am so glad i wasn't the only one who questioned this letter...seems like a great marketing ploy to drum up some business.
There are many many things people pass up on in life because at the time money IS important.
And why the need for $500 professional pics t capture memories? I don't get that . I understand doing it while someone has the money to burn, but I grab my regular old $100 camera and snap pics all the time of my family..
If this is a true letter, it's terrible that this lady is going through this...but if its not, shame on the photographer...something doesn't sit right with me though
Yes I agree with you 100%

Fake or not, it does bring up the good point to value your time, family, and money.
Im not about to run out and shell $500 for a professional photo shoot but if not for anything, it made me stop and think about my life.

And this is why I do a session every year with all of us...I take so many pictures of my kids but there are not that many of me with them.
Also when I was getting married in 2006 I insisted on the photgrapher taking many pics of my grandma and I...She died in 2008. I treasure these pictures so much!

Re: The price of a photo
I didnt think it was fake until reading this and now i agree that it very well could be fake. Even if it is fake, I think the message is clear...take photos so you can have memories to pass on from generation to generation. I am always the one taking the family pictures and even the pictures with friends, but after reading this (fake or not) i will hand over the camera more and ask people to take pictures of me with my loved ones.

Re: The price of a photo
This letter pisssed me off, I see it as an amateurish attempt to counter price objections.
"BUY WHAT I'M SELLING CAUSE NEXT YEAR YOU COULD BE DEAD".
I don't care whether you're selling $5 pashminas on Lexington Avenue or million dollar Steinway Pianos, you will always, ALWAYS encounter price objections - it's your job as the owner/marketer to make your offering stand out, to sell VALUE vs. price. If enough people hear your story and agree with it, you're golden.
So this letter, from a marketer's perspective, is a cheap shot. I truly believe the whole story is made up.

Re: The price of a photo
i do need to get into more pics but i then ask dh to take some. i can get alot of pictures printed for10.
to me 500 is more than the clothing budget for the year for the three of us
to me 500 is going to friendlys as a family once a month for a year. something may family would remember as a tradition.
when i win the lotto i still dont know if id be able to drop that much money on it. i was happy with the photo collage blanket that i spent 35 for this year that had 30 photos of ds mostly i took.
