The search for Steve Fossett Ends... (Thank Goodness?)
Dh and I have been POed with the amount of time and resources that have been spent searching for this man.
"one of the largest, most intensive searches for a missing aircraft in modern history."
This man was a so-called "adventurer" that chose to go on a flight without a real flight plan or any information that a "normal" pilot would provide when he went out.
He's filthy rich, bored, decides to go on some "adventures" to pass the time, and we all wind up funding a massive effort to find him.
Am I being heartless??

How did the search end?
Did they find him alive or dead?

I don't think you're being heartless. The same thought occurred to me. Of course I hope he is found alive. I just think he took risks like this for much of his life. He couldn't expect to always make it through without a scratch. But I never understand people who risk their lives for some excitement. I guess I'm a wimp. And a scaredy cat.

I wouldn't be surprised if his family and/or business has funded a big part of the rescue. I think you are being a bit insensitive, he was a human being after all, people loved him.
eta...I would think and hope that if he was a member of your family you would hope that anyone could and would do anything that they could to help you out.

.
I agree....do we know how much of the funds were public and how much were privately funded by his friends and family... I would think a large part of it would have been money that he himself earned as a businessman

I would hope that a member of my family wouldn't go on crazy adventures without telling us where they were going.
I hope it's the case that his business funded the rescue.
I think if you are going to take insane risks (i.e. flying a balloon around the world, going on weird plane missions, etc.) that you either give the most information you possibly can to those that might search for you if you go down... OR sign a waiver saying "If Im lost, it's my fault for not giving a flight plan, don't bother looking for me".
We spend alot less money looking for people that don't willingly take their lives in their hands for no good reason.
Im sure he was a good man that alot of people loved, but a little common sense would have prevented it all.
ETA: Just throwing a lively debate topic out there. I go back and forth on how I feel about it.. don't want to seem like the most insensitive b!tch

On a side note, they did end of finding several missing people that crashed out in that desert along time ago!

No, you're not insensitive or heartless-just stating an opinion. Maybe I'm worse bc I'm indifferent!

We only got fired up about this because it was the only US news coming over to Europe when we were there two weeks ago (besides Brittney's VMA performance, of course).
Im sure I would normally be indifferent

I thought I was stuck in some kind of time and space continuium. lol
Funny you say that, I haven't seen anything in the news here about Steve Fossett since he went missing. And I am a news junkie. I watch CNN and BBC24 pretty much constantly. My husband and I didn't know the search for Steve Fossett was called off, we didn't see if on the BBC website either.
