The Secret. . .
So I kind of glossed over this book when it was super-hyped a few months ago, but I watched Oprah's show about people "changed" by living by it's mantra...
What IS the mantra? Think it and it will come to you? Do you believe in it, positive thinking CAN bring you everything you want? Is it a load of hooey?
Discuss.

Re: The Secret. . .
I believe in it somewhat. I also glossed over the book - I couldn't really get past page 30 because it said the same thing over and over.
I do believe that if you have a positive outlook, your attitude towards everything is different. People I know who just have crappy attitudes are just not happy people and are constantly on the "Woe is me" thing.
Me? I try and think positive and say "We will have xxx soon" and I go with it. I figure it can't hurt, right?

maybe she's confused.
I am sure she just asks for stuff now and it magically appears.
perhaps she's forgetting about all the little elves she has working for her, and the pot of gold they have to work with

Re: The Secret. . .
Its an interesting concept. Its more than "if I put my mind to it, I will get it". The Secret says you have to KNOW you will get it, live like you already have it (feel happy & satisfied etc), you have to see yourself having it in your mind. Only when you are 100% positive that you will get it, will it come.
The only thing is, if you want a lot of money, how are you supposed to live like you already have it, when you dont?

I guess the point is to be happy and satisfied with the things you DO have, and with that happiness and satisfaction will come the rest? (I am totally guessing here)

I've seen the movie (too lazy to read the book), and I have to say that I agree with it. Not in the sense of "mine, mine, mine", and you get what you want, but more along the lines of positive thinking gets positive results.

Its that, and to feel additionally satisfied knowing that what you want will come into your life. I guess the "Secret" is that you have to KNOW it will come. And you have to keep on knowing. I tried it for a day, I couldnt keep it up longer than that.
Its easier said than done!
ed: There are also parts to the book that talk about gratitude. Its very similar to Oprahs talking about gratitude. You need to wake up and with each step you take, think of something your grateful for. At 5:30 am, walking to the bathroom, it is HARD to be grateful for anything.

Re: The Secret. . .
I read it..or rather glanced over it...I wasn't that impressed. Especially when the guy was talking about visualizing a parking spot opening at a crowded mall for him...
I think a lot of it is LUCK. I do believe a positive attitude in life is key about getting what you desire...and visualizing good things happening to ourselves is of course a great strategy.

Re: The Secret. . .
Basically its Quantum Physics.....People cant really wrap their minds around it b/c its advanced stuff. It is The Law of Attraction which is indeed a true scientific quantum law...but its not simple nor easy and I think the secret fails to point out the knowledge needed to understand it.
An example of the law of attraction is plants..we all know plants are living things....Scientists have found that plants work on a quantum level to attract air and the sun to themselves.
What you put into the universe you get....
I 100% believe it.
You can't think one day " I want to win the lottery " and have it happen...its a dedicated way of thinking and being and takes a lot of practice and effort.
So people who dont put effort in it will dismiss it.
We are wanting quick fixes all the time to our problems and when it takes dedication and a new way of life, not too many can really alter their thinking and accomplish it.
So I dont like that the secret put this idea into peoples heads and then made it seem silly when they couldnt simply wish for a new car......But the theory behind it works..

For what it's worth...
I practice it as much as I can, or remember to. It IS NOT a bunch of bull. I started before my surgery, then in the hospital after the surgery when it hurt to even move, I laid in bed thinking "I am getting out of here, I am getting better, I am NOT going to be like the woman next to me who complain s to whomever will listen, I can and will get up and walk around, I will be out of this hospital ASAP" Well...
I was discharge from the hospital in 5 days, in stead of 8 (which they originally told me it would be). I recovered faster than they thought I would. I believe in prayer and the law of attraction. I believe that prayer and visualization is why I recovered quickly and why I am alive today.

Re: The Secret. . .
I absolutely believe in the power of positive thinking to take you to new heights.
I only say that because I'm a teacher--and let me tell you, there have been days that I've cried, screamed, cursed and thrown things (usually at home, or sometimes in my classroom after hours)...
Thinking positively puts a whole new spin on the day. I really feel the difference on the days I don't.

Re: The Secret. . .
I agree that it does work. The only flaw I found with it is that it can seem as if you do not have to work for what you want in order to achieve it, that imagining it will magically bring it to you.
I've found that it works to help you hone in on your goals, approach things from a good positive perspective, and eliminate doubt in yourself from your mind.
DH and I have tried it and we've seen that it does work, MIL swears by it.

Re: The Secret. . .
It works & its not just "the secret". Joel Osteen, Sunday morning television super preacher says basically the same, except he calls it "god" instead of " the universe" Its really just the law of attraction, which has been refered to for centuries. I made a vision board last summer with about 15 things on it, about 5 of them were sort of unrealistic- meaning I had no idea how I could make those things happen. 3 of them happened along with at least 5 other not so lofty things. Its not magic, its focus. I get up & go to work everyday like I have for the last 20 yrs but I am convinced that things are changing for the better. I feel like the routine actions I perform are taking me where I want to go. I finally got my DH to start doing it in the fall, he created a mantra for himself that he says in the shower in the morning. Within three months he got a holiday bonus that was an unbelievable amount, his employer starting paying our health insurance in full and he is loving his job like I've never seen him love work.
I listen to the secret, joel osteen & a few other motivational podcasts in my car on my way to work. It sets my head straight for the day.

Ditto: Watched the movie, have yet to read the book. I saw the last Oprah show on the SECRET and totally agree with everything said, positive thinking!!
Give you my own true life experience: Friends and I are planning a couple get together for Valentine's on Sat.and it so happens to be my DH birthday tomorrow too.My friend calls me and tells me we all have to put in $50.00 for dinner and such.I say ok and once I hangup I try to figure out how to come up with $50.00 without my husband knowing, because it is a surprise. I hoped for $50.00 and maybe asking my mother for the time been.
Husband goes to an office meeting today and they raffled $50.00 AMEX gift card.Guess who won!! DH did and he gave the gift card to me to do with it as I pleased.
I think positive thinking does work. It doesn't hurt to try.

Re: The Secret. . .
I absolutely believe in it-
my own experience-- the laws of attraction saysdont think of debt but think of receiving checks
well I did and poof- I got a check in the mail from a doctor I saw 3 years ago- I guess I over paid dont know how- I paid my copay and that was it.
our DD needs surgery and an expensive one- we were fighting the insurance company b/c the only specialist who can perform the surgery is out of network ( only 3 in the country) and positive thinking, we got the call the insurance company will cover it 100% ( the dr. fee alone was 47,500)
and Im sure there are more good things to come.
so it def works!

Re: The Secret. . .
I read the book and watched the shows. The Secret video was a little hokey but I really do believe in the power of positive thinking and the law of attraction.
I try and practice it in my everyday life and I do believe that it helps me appreciate everything I have and the people around me more. I also believe it brings me closer to what I want out of life. I work hard, love a lot and put positive energy out into the universe. Winning the lottery has never been on my goals list, although that would be nice.
