Therapist
Can anyone recommend a good therapist that specializes in IF? As a therapist myself I know there are too many quacks out there to just pick one from a list.

Re: Therapist
I had the HARDEST time finding one! I called Resolve a bunch of times in absolute DESPERATION (it was when I had my ectopic, but didn't now I was pg yet so my emotions were CRAZY). Their machine said they would call back in 24 hours. Nothing. E-mailed them. Nothing.
Finally got a name from someone in Suffolk. Called, not taking new patients. Gave me 3 names. ALL NOT TAKING NEW PATIENTS! Infertility is big business on LI! One of those therapists gave me a recommendation for someone and she could only take me on Fridays at 1 So, I took it. I don't think she "specialized" in IF, but I believe she had experience with it, maybe personally...I went to her for a while.
BTW, it took WEEKS for Resolve to call me back. I was PI$$ED!!!!!!
Not much help I know. But, good luck!

Re: Therapist
Oh yes, let me add that I was trying to find one that took my insurance. I figured since I was paying for IVF and drugs out of pocket, let the insurance co pay for something!!!!

Re: Therapist
It's very hard to find one that accepts insurance. I believe the therapist at RSofNY does.
Dr. Lisa Schuman was a name that was given to me by Dr. Scher but she is located in Manhattan. She is a psychotherapist and her office is in Manhattan. 590 West End Avenue 212-874-1318. Maybe if she doesn't accept insurance or is too far away she can lead you to someone closer/insurance.
If you find a good one, I would definitely be interested. I just want it to be covered by insurance because acupuncture is expensive enough ...and I have no idea how much money any of this is going to end up costing.

Re: Therapist
I have seen a therapist that I have seen on and off for the past 8 years just for normal life stuff. I think I am just going to go back to her. I am not sure I need "a specialist". I was going to try to see if it was any different but I dont think I'll be able to find one. I think that all therapists can address my feleings. I dont have AIDS, Cancer, mental illness or drug addiction but I am able to provide therapy for all these people. Not sure what kind of difference "specializing in IF" would do. Its not like I would be going for medical advice.
NSUH does have a therapist in the office but only on Tuesday afternoons. She does accept insurance. The receptionist couldnt tell me if she is a social worker or psychologist and I couldnt find her licensed under either profession (if I was spelling her name right which I cant remember now).
The other thing that the receptionist mentioned to me was that their notes would go right in my chart. I dont like that at all and would have to verify if that is true. My/your therapy should be completely unrelated to my treatments. I would never want to be in a situation where I held back any feeling for fear that my doctor would change his considerations of my treatment.

All excellent points that I was thinking as I was reading these posts. All therapists have training that would be able to deal with issues related to infertility. I think the best approach is finding a therapist covered by your insurance that you feel comfortable with.
I must say though, as a therapist, its definately an area I will look into as a speciality. There are so many women, myself included, dealing with issues related to conceiving.

Re: Therapist
The reason I felt I wanted to go to someone familiar with infertility was that I didn't want to have to waste time explaining protocols and procedures while venting my feelings. I thought it would be non-productive...

your right about not having to explain the details. But at this point I dont think I would even talk about protocols juts how bad this all hurts.

Re: Therapist
I just wanted to send hugs to all of you. When I had really bad PPD finding a good therapist was VERY hard. I was amazed at the fact that there is a huge list of therapists on my insurance but very few could help me. I think IF would be really difficult to explain over and over again (the medical stuff) so having one that understands the terms, time frames etc..would help.

Re: Therapist
I wanted to add I ended up calling my EAP program ( employee assistance program) which MANY jobs have...are just very unadvertised.
They do ALL the legwork for you. They find a therapist with hours convienent to you and for your "issue" . My friend at work had 2 failed IVF's as well and has made an appointment to meet with someone who specializes in IF.
They even make the "intial assessment" apointment for you and its free.
Then you set up payment or insurance payment with the therapist.
It saved me sooo much legwork which I AVOID...so its something to look into.
Although of course I havent yet called the person they reccomended!
