There is smoke on the 4th floor in my building...
I am on the 5th floor and they are making us wait up here while it's being investigated, I am a nervous wreck right now

Well ladies, I am happy to say they just announced it was a false alarm  One that scared the crap outta me and all of my colleagues!
I couldn't leave because we have to follow the instructions of the Fire Warden. I guess burn to death until they say we could go downstairs 
ETA: I just realized, how could it be a false alarm if they said there was smoke?

that's crap. You are under no obligation to stay if you feel unsafe. I would have left via the stairwell.
Glad it was a false alarm.

DON'T follow the Fire Marshall's instructions if you feel your safety is at risk, all those people who survived 9/11 went against the plan and went against the fire depts central lan. I am on my hospital' Disaastr team and whenever we have a mock drill people always do what they want even after we try to keep them calm and insure them that it is a drill, they alwasy leave and I don't blame them or stop them. Glad you are OK, but in the future, get out!!!

We just had a fire drill today. We were told to evacuate if we felt it was necessary. In a high rise building, we have the option of evacuating to the floor below the fire...that's not happening...
PLEASE always trust your instincts!

after 9/11 my company in the city had a poliey that if you felt uncomfortable you can leave
they told all those people to stay at there desks that day- and I woul dnot fellt comfortable if I heard that again
