They come from the Sweetgum tree. Here's what they look like in front of my house...

And here's what I'm talking about...

I'm not exaggerating when I tell you there are THOUSANDS of these things all over my back and side yards. I spent two hours this morning raking them up. I'm surprised no one's broken their ankle yet around here.

It's a long-shot, but does anyone else have these and how do you deal?

They're just weird looking

Do they serve any purpose at all?

I guess they have some nutrents in them or something that helps the tree.

But I'm no botanist and they're pretty annoying

They're seed balls.

They are super annoyng when you have horses. When the horses roll, the balls get stuck in their tails and sometimes in their manes. They're a PITA to get out!

If it makes you feel any better, I have gingko trees in my neighborhood and anyone who has had experience with them can tell you that their 'seeds' stink like sh**! Chat Icon It's terrible.

Sorry to hear about your balls though.

I have them all over my yard as well. I hate them. DH and I plan on getting the tree removed. They hurt to step on them.

YES!!!

I have been collecting these seed heads. You know what I'm doing with them? Lining my bulb beds with them. Know why? Cute little ravenous bunny rabbits and squirrels don't like to step on them either!

I think they're beautiful trees, but can see how they could be annoying. Btw, your home is beautiful.

We have them - I just wait for the landscaper to come and clean them all up. they are ALL OVER our driveway. I don't think I'd have the energy to clean them up myself.

Re: These itchy balls are driving me bananas...does anyone else have them?

We called them burr balls and had them at our old house! I could not stand them either and could not wait to leave!

But while there, I figured... if you can't beat them, join them! I used them (not nearly enough to make a dent in getting rid of them) for some clear vase fillers. I rinsed and dried a bunch (to get rid of any critters), cut the stems off and filled a glass vase with some beach grass (another annoying overgrown thing that we had) and made the best of an "itchy" situation!!!

No itchy balls here, just want to say that your house is so charming! I love it.
