These parents must be devastated beyond belief

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brooklyn/2008/08/27/2008-08-27_brooklyn_girl_3_drowns_in_boat_accident_.html

My son's orthopedist is the dr they are talking about. I feel so horrible for them but have to wonder why a 3 year old was on this boat

mortified?

Chat Icon Chat Icon for the family. I wonder too, why a 3 year old was a sailboat. However, she knew how to swim & was wearing a life jacket. Just a horrible tragedy

Horrible accident. I would think they would be devastated, not mortified.

I read about this too - I'm an avid sailor and I use to teach. And there is NO WAY I would have a 3 year old on a boat. It's just stupid and negligent Chat Icon

I am sure letting her go on a boat is a decision they will forever regret.

I agree, we go out on my parents boat with my 2yo and 4yo nieces ALL the time. They have to wear life preservers. I don't understand why they would be mortified?? Chat Icon

The school I taught at, the youngest we would allow children on the boats was 8 years old. I would NEVER let my 3 year old on a HOBIE CAT with a teenage instructor, under NO conditions whatsoever.

I consider myself a very good sailor, and even *I* wouldn't allow her to go on a hobie cat with me.

A larger sailboat with a cabin, maybe, but NEVER a hobie cat. Those things flip SO easily.

Re: These parents must be devastated beyond belief

Its a tragedy that could have been avoided. That is what makes it so sad. There is no way anybody especially an 18 year old could help all 3 kids. I thought it was usually a requirement that you could swim before you could get a sailing lesson.
