Phelps won his seventh gold by .01 of a second.
About as close as close gets. It didn't even look like he touched the wall first, but i'm not gonna argue.

Yeah, it was ridiculously close. Even his mom thought he got silver & nearly passed out when she saw he was in 1st. It seemed that the other guy got there first, but Phelps touch first.
I don't blame them for protesting--they didn't make a big deal, the coach just filed an official inquiry, and the tech committee reviewed the footage, but the medal ceremony went on anyway, & the silver medalist didn't throw a fit like that wrestler the other day. They just wanted to be sure.
I'm actually glad they did it, b/c if Phelps wins his 8th gold, I'm sure people would be whining that the 7th didn't count & that someone should have protested. But now that's out of the way.
I can see why the other guy's coach wanted to avoid a situation like Paul Hamm's gold in '04 (men's gymnastics), where the judges were actually wrong, but the other guy protested too late.

I thought the other guy actually won. It does appear that way still from the overhead cameras which was what coach based his protest on.
I am not convinced Phelp really won but hey, officially it was reviewed and he did.

I felt the same way and kept replaying it. From overhead it looks like the other guy won, but from underneath Phelps out-touched him by like half a fingernail. I've never seen anything like it!

Sometimes its difficult to tell in swimming. It doesn't matter who gets there first - its who actually touches the wall first. It can be deceiving seeing it from above.

exactly - and isn't it the sensor in the wall that determines the winner anyway? so what could phelps have possibly done to "cheat" that?

I saw an underwater shot on one of the stations and it looked like Phelps did touch just an instant before. Doesn't he have an arm span of something like 6' 7"? Even if it looked like he was second from the head and body, the longer arms would reach first, and that's what counts - he touched first.
