Re: They don't know their multiplication tables.
I think it is sooooo important to understand the concept of mulitplication but they also have to MEMORIZE the facts from 0-12. Do a quick review of how easy 0, 1, 2, 5, 10 and 11 are. You can teach them the 9 trick using fingers (if you know that). Also, multiplying times 4 is teh same as multiplying times 2, then doubling the answer. Same goes for X 8. Mult. by 2, then double, then double again.
Have them make their OWN flash cards using index cards and have them review for the first 5 minutes of class and as h/w. Play games if you can.

Re: They don't know their multiplication tables.
I like the idea of them making their own flashcards. They could then sit with a buddy and test each other. I am so tempted to get old school on them and have them recite the multiplication tables as a class. I'm thinking if they hear them enough, it might stick.

I don't teach math, but what about school house rock? I still remember my 3s and 5s by those songs

Re: They don't know their multiplication tables.
I did a LOT of multiplication bingo, even with my 8th graders. Got prizes from the dollar store and they worked!

same here...and we're doing fractions.
My coach said the old tried-and-true multiplication drills are the way to go.....
I dunno how I feel about it. but I'm going to try it out.

I teach 4th grade, but I also play a lot of Multiplication Bingo or we play computer games that review the basic facts.

Re: They don't know their multiplication tables.
It's so frustrating, isn't it? My 5th graders didn't know them last year, either.
I think there's such a push away from memorization that it's manifesting itself in some counterproductive ways.

Re: They don't know their multiplication tables.
My kids are going to learn there multiplication tables this year and although itll be later in the year im still about it because they still dont know their addition and subtraction facts, they still use their fingers!!!!
I'm sending home fact sheets 2 days next week as homework then spending a day playing a game using home made flash cards.
