Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
I know what you mean. I have my homeroom class for the first and last two periods of the day. They are like a totally different class in the afternoon! They come from lunch and are feeling very social. I guess they are still half asleep in the morning.

Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
Today I singled out one kid (because he started calling names and used a word that really offended me) so I used my cell phone and called his mother from right outside the room. I didn't make it obvious but they all knew what I was doing. If I have to do it again, I will.
Otherwise, I don't know what to do. The sad things are that I really like my kids otherwise, and these are the smallest classes I've ever had (22 and 21 kids). But they just don't stop yapping!

I have been yelling at them from day 1!! All they do is talk, it's actually hard to get a word in..I can't take it anymore! And they are good kids but they definitely don't shut up!
I would love some tips on what I can do too. I've threatened extra homework?? I don't know..

Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
Yea the talking is getting on my nerves. Today I sat and waited and waited and waited casually saying well its fine you can talk all you want now, yup keep talking, go ahead that spelling work has to get done and your wasting that time, i guess youll have to do it during recess instead, wow thats a shame.
They stopped and with those glassy eyes of tears starting to form i got quiet, for about 10mins. So an hour later I flipped and said since you wasted my time and your by running your mouths I took away recess and they had to sit in silence after lunch for 30mins.
The spanish teacher also made them write me lines of I'm sorry Ms.XXX like 50 times each. (Its private school) Lets see how they act tomorrow.

Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
Yea I'm not really used to the whole set up of really "punishing" the kids like my 2 TA's tell kids to stand facing the wall when they are misbehaving. I used to take away recess and gym when I worked in NYC that was as far as i've gone, since everything else was a big no-no.
I feel bad punishing them like that, yet I always wished I could make harder punishments last year. I'm a softee or rather I don't feel like abusing the power yet since we are only 5days in

Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
I'm not sure if you have a center or play or free time, but my rule is,"If you don't finish your work at work time, you finish it at play time-work first, then play." Other than that...hmm...talk about respect?

Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
I tell them they dont get their work during their time they do it during playtime simple as that- its not a punishment. I also say whatever we dont get done in class because of the constant interuptions will be sent home for homework.... I havent gotten to half the things I usually do because of the constant interruptions- if its not the kid w autism having a meltdown its the clique girls if its not them the boys are talking and talking back-
they have no idea!!!

I hear ya- I go to nicely reprimand them to be quiet and they smirk at me- I lost it with one kid and told him to leave my room-

Wow thats crazy, but i know the feeling my class was talking all through the fire drill we had today. They are the oldest kids in the school, I embarassed them when we got back to the room. A few kids had recess taken away, if they dont get there act together they are going to have a nasty week next week and they arent going to like their punishments.
I'll get better with time im sure

Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
I give each student 3 popsicle sticks. They write their names on them. We call them their "talking sticks". If I catch them talking, they have to give me one. When they run out (3 strikes), they have to stay in for recess.
I swear that all I have to say is, "Take out your talking sticks," and it gets them silent for at least 10 minutes. Then if the murmuring starts up again, I'll make an example of a couple of them and ask for one of their sticks. This quiets the whole class again. I have never had any student run out of them. They get them back the next morning. So each day, they start with 3. I teach 6th grade and they don't think it's too babyish. I wouldn't care if they did, but it works.

Re: They won't shut up!!!!!
Thanks. It truly works. I also tell them that if they lose their sticks, they don't get new ones. So if they only have 1 left, they start each day with only 1 strike left.
Let me know how it works for you guys!

That does sound like a great idea. Would it work for 3rd grade? I am scared with theis class what they would do with their popsicle sticks....
