Thinking about switching to a Mac
My PC is about 6 years old. I only have 256 RAM (I know how to upgrade, but after leaving my IT job, am SO adverse to doing any hardware work). We basically use the computer for Internet access, photos, videos and games. We're seriously considering a Mac, even though neither of us have much, if any, experience with them. I'm just looking for opinions. Have you switched? Have you always used one? Is it hard to make the transition? Any input is appreciated. Thanks!

Agreed. We will never go back to PC.
I have a mac laptop and DH has a desktop. My laptop is 4 yrs old and never needed an upgrade (you get internal upgrades automatically) or to be fixed at all! It still runs as fast as the first day I got it.

Re: Thinking about switching to a Mac
After having used a mac at my last job, I wanted an ibook for our next computer. Our last laptop was a Toshiba and we've had it for 6 years and it still works pretty well, but I wanted to be able to do more with the kids pics and videos.
DH went out and got me a Toshiba Satellite for this past Christmas, so it's still pretty much brand new. It sux. The wireless connection goes down if the cordless phone rings, when I use the slot to upload pics from our memory card it erases them instead. We haven't even upgraded to Vista since I'm worried that it will just be a million more problems.

Re: Thinking about switching to a Mac
I have both in my office (I do all the desktop publishing on the Mac) and I would always prefer the PC. It's such a pain having to think about all the shortcuts...Like cut/paste functions, etc. Everything is different, and after a couple years of using it I still prefer the PC.

I agree. Although I enjoy the more "artistic" aspects of the mac, I am just so used to a PC I don't think I would ever want to spend the time "re-learning" everything again!

Re: Thinking about switching to a Mac
I switch back and forth between them. I have PC at work, MAC at home.
I really don't see much of a difference to be honest with you. I find pros and cons to both.
I like the right click feature on PC which MAC really doesn't have. MAC is very intuitive especially if you're coming from PC. It's basically the same - just use the Apple key instead of the Control key really.

Re: Thinking about switching to a Mac
I went from an HP to 2 macs. My only complaint is that if you surf the net ALOT you might run into some issues....not all sites are mac-friendly (in that hot links & radio buttons do not always show).
Other than that I love it & hate using my PC at work now. I have a G3 (which I am actually cleaning up to sell) and we just got a new powerbook G4. Love them both!

Re: Thinking about switching to a Mac
DH just bought a Mac 2 months ago. We have always been PC users. He loves it. The only complaint he had was going back and forth between his work PC and home Mac with Word and Excel documents. But if you are just using it for internet, photos, video and games, I think you will find it easier to use than a PC and that it has more to offer.
