This drives me crazy!!! UPDATE 7.30.08

My next door neighbor has a 12-15 pound dog (beagle pomaranian (sp?) mix). He is really little and has a lot of energy. My neighbor is almost never home during the day...and well into the early evening. Every night when I come home from work the dog is in the backyard barking his little head off b/c he hears my dog playing with DH in the yard. They have him tied up. Again, they are never home and it is hot outside! They leave him out there when they are not home!!!

I've tried to talk to my neighbor about it and I have actually gone over there a few times and taken the dog for a walk and given him water. But, I am 8 1/2 months pregnant and I can't do that everyday. I feel so bad for this poor littel pup!! Should I call the SPCA?

UPDATE:
So my neighbors went away with their kids this past weekend. They dropped the dog off for the weekend. When they got back, they were told that the dog was left in the friend's backyard unsupervised and he dug his way out. They were unable to find him and he has been missing since Saturday. He had his tags on and he is chipped, but nobody has turned him in. Part of me hopes that someone kept him and is giving him a ton of attention and a good life. Part of me feels terrible that their pooch ran away and the kids are so sad.

This makes me so angry What did you say when you tried to talk to them? This is animal cruelty and I am not sure what you should do yet i really have to hear more facts!! But by what you posted I am already

Ok this is B S call the spca ask to remain anonymous. (you cant have trouble with your neighbors) I am sure they will
surrender this dog to them.. WHY WHY WHY did they get another dog???

Or ask If she is stilll thinking about re homing this one because you can start asking around if they are?

Calling the SPCA is tough in this situation. If the dog is not left outside 24/7 they won't do anything. As long as the dog has shelter, food and water they can't take the dog.
I know cuz I tried calling them on my neighbor who leaves their dog outside 24/7/365 and all he does is bark. But, because they have an igloo outside for him and he gets food and water, they are fulfilling their responsibility to the dog. BTW, now they have another dog that's outside with the first.

You would be better off talking to the woman about rehoming the dog. You have a much better chance with that option since she seems to think she doesn't want the dog anymore. Of course, the downside is that they may decide to get yet another dog and I can guarantee the level of care won't change.

Not everyone considers their dog a part of the family. I have seen a lot of people have dogs either just for protection or it's a pet, but they don't let it in the house. It's very sad - but unfortunately there isn't much you can do.

Maybe if you did call the SPCA that will scare them into realizing maybe the dog would be better off in a better home? Whats the point of even having a dog if you have it tied up all day?

The dog is tied up using one of the things that screws into the ground and has a leash on the end. They only tie him up b/c he was digging under the fence and was running around the neighborhood (DH and I have had to bring him back a few times). They are not leaving him with shade and I doubt that there is much water back there. I had gone back in their yard in the past and there has never been water or shelter. And, the food is in the house so I know he has no food when he is tied up.

I agree with most of the posters,,,,,I WOULD call. Especially if there is no shade, no food and no water. Maybe that will give them a good scare and they will start taking care of the dog by not leaving him out all day or maybe they will decide to give him away.
It breaks my heart that he is outside all day....especially with how hot it has been the last few days.

Please call or do something.. I am so twisted reading this.. How can they do this to any animal. its almost like they want him to die..

I bet they are embarrassed to ask you to help them re home the dog because they shouldn't have gotten another one after you helped to re home the last one. I know i would be ashamed to ask you again. that's why maybe you can keep asking them..

I hate having problems with neighbors.. So what ever you do remain calm and kind.. You can think what you want about them but to be living next door to people and fight with them to me is a horror in itself.. Please keep us posted

those poor kids. i hope the puppy has a nice new home to live in though and not be put outside like some bug.
