Re: This is going to sound horrible...
I honestly don't mean to generalize. It has just been my experience as of late. I have traveled a lot in my life as well, and have been welcome with open arms.
Just a rant to get it off my chest so that I did not punch one of my friends in their head.

If it makes you feel any better, DH used to work for the NYC office of a Canadian company and any time he had to call someone in Canada they used to tell him how they wished they were able to use the company's American health benefits, they hated the national health system.
I agree. A lot of Canadians are coming to the US for treatment because the system there s*cks! National healthcare is not a good system, just ask people in England who have to wait months for an appointment. My mom has a friend who's father has cancer and they wanted him to wait like 5 months for an xray They are like he may not be alive in 5 months if they can't get all his testing done. In this country the system is overburdened already, it will be much worse if we go to national healthcare. The difference between this country and some others, is that in reality, nobody can be turned away from medical care. In other countries you could be dying at the door of the hospital but if you cant pay well..too bad.

This is most likely an isolated incident, rather than the norm and to be honest, I wouldn't believe that time scale. I had a cancer scare and I was treated top to bottom on the NHS within an hour (ie Biopsy, Scan, and appointment with a surgeon) and the actual surgery was done within 2 weeks. Its a lottery as to your care where you live, there are waits for certain things, but cancer is treated urgently in general on the NHS. I have had nothing but wonderful experiences on the NHS in the 9 years I have lived in the UK. (just sharing my experience) and yes, there are mean and stupid people everywhere bashing everyone all the time. It stinks, but its true!

This is going to sound terrible, but sometimes this actually happens in other countries (maybe not in UK, but others it does), where they prioritize who gets treatment first based on prognosis and quality of life? For instance, you are a young healthy individual and you have a better chance of survival and a good outcome than an 80 year old man. If this is in fact the way things happen, they would say that you have a whole life ahead of you and this man doesnt have much time left, it makes more sense to treat you first. I am just making a guess here that maybe this was the case in his situation, but I don't know. I'm glad to hear that you did get prompt treatment though

No. Since most health care systems in Europe are for everyone on all levels, doctors don't prefer someone because you are young or old, healthy or not. Everyone is treated the same way. Old people use the system a lot more than younger people. They are not pushed to the side by any means.

I am not saying that old people just get pushed to the side, I mean that people of any age who are deemed terminal with no chance of recovery or cure may not be a first priority for treatment, as it is in some countries. I don't know the specifics of every country, but working in a hospital with a very high population of immigrants from many different places, I hear personal stories from them about how in thier countries if you don't have money to pay then you are not seen by a doctor and treated, including walking into a ER dying and if you cant pay up front they just leave you there to die. This also includes parents who bring in thier sick children. If they can't pay, they can't get treatment. This is how the governments set the laws in some countries. Its sad to hear, but this does happen, and hopefully this will change in the near future and no person will ever have to suffer like this again.
Our 3rd year residents also do an international medicine elective and many of them also relay the same stories as our immigrant patients here do. These are not usually developed countries such as England, but they all came back from where they were so disheartened that there were lives that could not be saved due to lack of supplies and the way the system worked. They couldn't just take what they needed because they were not allowed to. Also, in these countries where the care cannot be given without prior payment, the doctors are not the ones who push the patients to the side, its the insurance/government who will not pay for it and just going ahead and taking supplies to do so would be the same as stealing and you could wind up in jail over it. My friends learned a lot from working with these doctors in other countries and they are just as caring and compassionate as they are here, its the system that stinks. They make the best of what they have and do whatever they can to try to save the person's life with what they have. I do not know what the position of England and other European countries regarding what they consider "futile care" as they do with these other countries. I know it differs from the US, but I do not know specifially what they consider it be, but I know that they do not always do as much to prolong life with poor prognosis as we do in the US. That is why I assumed that maybe this is the reason for this man to have to wait months for an x-ray. I was just taking a guess, like I said I don't know for a fact and am not claiming to know for sure.

This is interesting...I've heard the opposite about Britain's NHS. I lived in London for 6 months while I was assisting with an international arbitration. Most of the Brits I spoke to hated the NHS, and did not use it but rather had private care.
As to the OP, don't let the Canadians get you down. They are just jealous of the usa!!
