The difference, imo, is you stating your opinion amongst friends...and him stating his opinion to hundreds of thousands of people. His voice will be heard louder than yours...and imo, that has the potential to perpetuate a problem. QUOTE]
I think that puts too much responsibility on famous people. They are only human, and are entitled to their opinions. We have to own up to our actions- if someone ran over their pet and claimed Clay Aiken made them do it, that excuse would just not fly with me. It would just be passing the blame for their cruelty, which is inside them regardless of Clay Aiken.

Like I said, I don't wear leather - so I obviously don't think it's "OK". However, the production of fur is more heinous than that of leather. To grow an animal purely for their fur, is sick. At least the entire cow is being used...as sad and as disgusting as I think that is.
However, I try to be realistic. Leather isn't going anywhere as long as people continue to eat cows. Fur, OTOH, is purely for fashion purposes.
I understand what you are saying. sorry-what is OTOH?

IMO killing for their skin, fur...it is still killing for it. People dont need leather just as much as they dont' need fur. Leather isn't going anywhere and lets face it...fur isn't either
THis being said i do ont wear any fur but i do have many leather and suede products
I'd agree with you if your first sentence was entirely true. However, cows are not killed first and foremost for their skin - they are killed for meat. Chinchilla's, otoh, are killed for the sole purpose of their fur. *I* personally don't see a difference - but like I said, I'm realistic...it would be easier to get rid of fur than to get rid of leather.
As for fur not going anywhere...it was almost non-existant in the 90s. I do believe that if enough people backed up their beliefs, we could get rid of fur.

Yes, well the 90s are over and in a time when the 80s are "back" - fur is, unfortunately, almost everywhere.

The beef WE eat may come from different cows than the leather, but I think the meat that comes from the leather cows is still eaten.

OMG I played 2 seconds of it and had to shut it off. It made me sick to my stomach and dizzy and so angry Watching that is like watching a video of Casey and my 2 cats in a smushed truck in China. I am SO angry at that!

Re: This is not for people with weak stomachs...
I don't know thos for a fact, but I was under the impression that the way they kill the animals for leather is a lot more humane than the way they kill for fur. Becuase fur basically has to remain intact, so they have these horrible killing methods, wheras leather is so treated it's less of a problem. I'd be really itnerested if anyone can find a good article regarding this
ETA: According to an articel I just read on peta.org, the leather furs ARE the meat cows, and leahter is what keeps a lot of meat farmers in business
