Driver arrested after crash leaves another driver critically hurt
A New Jersey man fell asleep at the wheel Sunday morning on Montauk Highway in Bridgehampton, causing a head-on collision that left another driver with life-threatening injuries, police said.
Fred N. Slaughter, 43, faces a charge of unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, Southampton Town police said. Slaughter's driver's license had been suspended eight times due to numerous traffic infractions during the past year, police said.
The driver of the other car, a 41-year-old man from Water Mill, was trapped in his 1992 Toyota after the 8:24 a.m. collision near Poxabogue Lane. He was taken by police helicopter to Stony Brook University Medical Center, where he was in critical condition.
The victim's name was not immediately released by the police, pending notification of his family. No additional information was available Monday on the victim's condition, police said.
Slaughter, of Hackensack, N.J., was headed west in a 2005 Subaru just before the accident, police said.
He "fell asleep crossing over the eastbound lanes and onto to the eastbound shoulder, where he awoke and swerved sharply to his right and struck the eastbound vehicle head-on near the center of the roadway," police said.
Slaughter was treated for minor injuries at Southampton Hospital, then was arrested on a misdemeanor, aggravated unlicensed driving, and an infraction, failure to stay in a traffic lane.
The Bridgehampton Fire Department assisted after the accident, removing the Water Mill man from his car and taking him to a Suffolk police helicopter.
Montauk Highway was closed in both directions for about 2 1/2 hours during the investigation.
