This is why DH tells me to stay off the internet...link between Pitocin and autism?
Now I am terrified if they want to induce me. First it was the shots, than the problem with the bottles and now this. Why do I always find the articles that scare the $hit out of me?

Absolutely - as an autism professional, I hear all sorts of kooky links between something and autism.
There is NO way that this can be properly researched. Between this and the whole vaccination scare, people are going nuts.
The only clear link that has been proven so far is that autism is genetic. All these other theories cannot be proven or researched properly.
Yes - 60% of the patients used Pitocin - but more women are getting induced using Pitocin, so Pitocin can be linked to anything, really. It does not make sense
This really gets me. I love this in a study:
An informal survey among the dozen or so community midwives practicing in our geographical area and spanning the last 20 years, failed to identify any babies born at home who have since been diagnosed with autistic disorders.
NEVER go by an "informal survey!" That means NOTHING. And - why did they "fail to identify" - even that wording is ridiculous.
PLEASE don't look into this at all.... and don't worry!

I know I have to stay off the internet. I have a habit of believing everything I read (most of the time). All this baby stuff makes me so nervous b/c I always think what if I make a certain decision and something happens I will be at fault and never forgive myself. But like you said it was an informal study and it seems like there are plenty of women who get induced for various reasons and their babies are fine.

I've seen a much more convincing study linking an infant/toddler's exposure to TV as a contributing factor, and even that to me is a bit far fetched.
Stay off the internet and don't worry. Everything will be fine.

It IS far fetched - there was nothing convincing about that study either - there is no way to control a study like that enough to prove anything definitively....
Sorry - I will take off my autism hat now...

I have been working for 11 years with children with autism too and I will agree with Liza. To my knowledge, there is a genetic link, but the gene has yet to be identified. People so desperately want answers and I think researchers need to be EXTREMELY careful as to the information they put out in the public. There are so many factors that could lead to a genetic predisposition towards autism. Hopefully someday, they will have more information.
I also agree to stay off the net. It can be dangerous. I know in other situations, it has scared the heck out of me unnecessarily.

STOP READING!!!!
I was given pitocin during my labor and my 2 year old is fine, he's a very smart, socialable little boy.
In this day and age everything we use, eat or drink, someone somewhere is going to have an "informal study" on it and claim it raises risks for cancer, birth defects, learning disablities etc. Relax and enjoy your last weeks of pregnancy
