This makes me sad
There is an acquaintance of mine from when I was younger that a friend of mine still speaks with. Well, this acquaintance is 20w preggo and she still smokes
And, her grandma (her mom passed away) tells her that it's perfectly ok because "back in the day" people still drank and smoked. Yes, they also didn't have sonograms and didn't know everything that they know now.
I know that everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but it makes me sad that she sees absolutely nothing wrong with smoking while pg.
PS: AND, I am a former smoker...I feel that it is such a small sacrafice to make when you look at the risks.

Re: This makes me sad
I HATE people that do this. I think it's one of the most selfish things you can do. Yes, quitting smoking's hard, but it's a small price to pay for a healthy baby. Shame on her and shame on her Grandma for supporting it.

Re: This makes me sad
That's sad. People used to do a lot of stupid things that now we know isn't safe. But I suspect that there is no getting through to her.
My grandma says stuff like "in my day we drank and smoked through our whole pregnancies, it's a miracle that more children weren't born sick!"
Although my aunt has severe allergies all her life (had to have several surgeries) and my uncle had to have eye surgery at 2, so maybe their kids aren't as healthy as they thought, it was just normal for back then. You know?

Re: This makes me sad
I was just in MD visiting family over the holiday and their next door neighbor who is due in two weeks was outside puffing away. We couldn't believe it - my SIL said she smoked throughout her pregnancy - at least 6-8 a day.

Re: This makes me sad
Posted by girlygrl33 Yes my mom smoked with me but you know when our moms and grandmas had babys they were not exposed to the same earth that we are today. there are more toxins, radiation, ozone, pesticides than before, they just dont realize it. Especially with the fish thing I heard oh we ate all of that- yea well I dont think the water is as safe as it was then.
but I know exaclty what you mean!
Exactly!
There were also so many miscarriages back then that people didn't even know about because they didn't do sonos. Most people didn't even know they were pg until 3 months into the pregnancy. My mom also smoked, and yes, we are all fine, but look at how many still born babies there were back then and also how many infant deaths. That number has decreased drastically.
Don't get me wrong, I still have a cup of coffee occasionally and I still eat cold cuts once in a while, but I have cut back drastically and I make a conscious effort to not do harmful things.

Re: This makes me sad
First of all pumpkin, I gotta say congrats on quitting smoking! It's the best thing you could do for you and your baby! It's no exaggeration when they say nicotine is more addictive than heroin...
My mom and dad were big-time smokers (3-4 pack per day each). They never thought about cutting down with any of their kids. And my mom keeps saying how healthy and smart we are, but we both have allergies, migraines, and who knows how smart we'd be without that stuff. My dad quit 5y before he died of lung cancer. My mom quit when she saw him suffer. My brother smokes and my mom does "occasionally." I just don't get it - we all saw my dad pass away it baffles me.
If I were a smoker, I am sure my mom would not get on my case about quitting. But she does get on my case about having an intense job, which is almost good for us because of all the exercise.
This is why we are not going to live near her if she doesn't quit. If she does quit, we'll move in an adjacent apartment (which she'd love). Her call, grandkid or no. I'm not having my kid suffer like I did - no way.
Addicts will rationalize in any way possible to get the fix they need. It's so sad to see, but as long as the government has it legal, people will still be able to say it's ok. Thanks tobacco lobbyists!
Sorry this is so long, but I have a lot of strong feelings about this issue.

There are no words for that type of behavior...I know it is hard to quit. My cousin smoked her whole pregnancy as well and I just refused to be a witness to it. I just couldn't not say anything so instead I just stayed away.

Thanks
Although it really wasn't difficult. It didn't even fase me and I hope to never go back!!! It wasn't difficult because I knew it was something that I HAD to do. It wasn't something that was not debatable.

Re: This makes me sad
I just want to add that the rationale "we used to it back in the day..." is BS. Cigarettes today are full of more additives and toxins than they were 20 years ago, so you really can't compare the two. It's unbelievable that with so much documented evidence on the dangers of smoking to a fetus that anyone would continue to do it!

Re: This makes me sad
I know exactly what you mean. When I got pregnant with Miranda I was a smoker. I quit cold turkey and haven't touched a cigarette in 4 years. IMO its such a small price to pay for a healthy baby, not to mention the health risks it poses to the smoker.

Re: This makes me sad
our sil is look to get pregnant. dh brother told him that she can't quit cold turkey. they know plenty of people that smoked while preggo. why would they want to harm an innocent child. we can't really say anything. we just hope that they have a healthy child

Re: This makes me sad
That is horrible!
I hear the same crap from my family. You know when we had you guys we did, so and so and you guys turned out to be fine! I would of had a 2nd brother, but the baby was born full term as a stillborn. She said it was from getting very sick with something. Who knows what really caused it? Everyone in my family smoke except my sister and I. I HATE cigarettes. Unfortunately my DH does too.
I don't understand how anyone can do that while being PG. To me, it doesn't show that they care about the health of the baby because you never know what causes what? It's hard enough and stressful enough when you're PG trying to have a healthy without adding in smoking and drinking, etc. People just don't get it!
I can't even say that well, they're just going to do what they're going to do, but in the long wrong if something is wrong with the baby, then it's the baby who has to suffer!
