This may be a stupid cough question...

My ds has had a few colds....runny nose, trouble sleeping....but these colds never involved coughing. Now he has a runny nose and is coughing ALOT. He is still in good spirits, lots of smiles, no fever.

How serious does a cough have to be before you call the doctor? Because his colds usually don't go hand in hand with a cough, i don't know how serious this is!

I personally wouldn't call the doctor if i had a cold with a bad cough, but i'm a lot bigger than my little man and i'm just a worried mama!

Lucas seems to be coughing more and more so I asked the doctor at the last visit and he said that it was because of the teething and slight cold. The nasal drip sort of tickles their throat and they cough as a reaction.

He said that I should look out for mucas when he coughs...then it's something more serious.

ETA: He also said that a really long bad hacking...almost sounds like a seal is a sign of croup.

TJ coughs too...but I think it is probably b/c of nasal drip from the congestion. If it is a cough where he needs to go to the dr. I think he will sound congested in his chest, his cough will sound different (either phlegmy or cracked) or he would have a fever.

ETA: Plus when they are teething and have excessive drool they probably choke on their saliva.

I have been thinking that the runny nose has been from teething. And i've heard that it drips down and can give them a cough!

Thanks for your responses, Ang and Crissy! He is playing right now like he's not even sick....

I took my dd to doc b/c her cough sounded like an 80 yr old who smoked. but he said she was fine, and not in lungs. It went a way for like a 2 days and now everything is back again..

I say just call the peds to make sure not in lungs.

Don't get scared...I swore I heard it too but I was wrong. When it is really bad they will let you know in their own way.

For him to be smiling and playing sounds like it's just the drip from some slight congestion and teething causing it.

When you get really scared...then something is wrong. My doctor says that mom will always know even when you don't know what it is...something goes off in your head. He said 9 times out of 10 that warning is always right.
