This may be an idea to help us feel safer
As I mentioned in the other post, the thing that bothers me is the amount of lurkers on here. There are some people who come on here for support, to make friends and are regular posters. On the other hand, I read somewhere there are a couple thousand people on here, yet it seems the same 50 people or so are the only ones posting. I understand it is a public forum, however, maybe something that will help us feel safer is that after a certain time of being inactive (not posting) Ron can de-active them so they can no longer view the boards to weed out the lurkers. But, this kate07 chic wasn't a lurker, she created a whole fake profile which I guess us "regulars" are responsible to look out for each other.
This is an idea and soemthing I'm sure probably can't be done. It is just upsetting that so many of us have made great friends on here and look to one another as a support system and yet again we feel like we can't share pictures of our children, or our names or everyday stories b/c there are crazies out there. But I guess that is what goes along with being on a public forum.
Do any of you have any ideas maybe we can present to Ron to help make us feel better about being on here?

This is how I feel and I wish there was something that could be done to regulate the fake people/lurkers. But unfortunately, that seems to be impossible

I belong to another board and you can only veiw and post if you pay a small fee (I think like $3) and it lasts forever, but they verify your name, address, etc. Then you can view and post on the message boards. I think that's a great idea, but can see that it might be a lot of work!

The thing is, I'm sure 99% of the lurkers are completely innocent. Ron runs a public forum; lurkers come with the territory (and there's mostly nothing wrong w/ lurkers).
If you really want some sort of privacy/safe haven, you probably need to start your own private board (which do exist).

True. There is just always that one person who has to ruin it for everybody.

I think that if you want to be safe, just don't post pictures of you or your family or give out personal information. THat's the only way to be safe. Anyone can make up a fake persona, so if you want that safety you have to do the work yourself. THe only thing I could possibly see is if Ron made an option on your photo albums to make them public or private, then if it was private, only people on your Friends list could see it. Then at least the friends list would have a use.

I, for one, am kind of glad that this happened and, of course, glad that no harm has come to anyone. It's a quick reminder for people not to let their guard down too much. I don't post personal info (names) or pics for this very reason. I am glad that others will start to be wary about the info that they share.

just out of curiousity...if she had been here so long and had alot of friends...she never met 1??? I dont know the whole deal. I just think after a while you would meet someone, no?

Apparently not. Lots of people have internet friends only. We just assume that the pics showed are legit.
But again, predators of children pose as kids themselves on the internet.
I guess unless you actually meet people, you indeed never really know who you are talking to.

Well, I have been on for awhile and have no friends except one that I knew pre-lifamilies. I have also never met anyone from the boards. I try to read and post everyday but just haven't gone to any of the get togethers or anything.

Unfortunately, lurkers can and probably will pay a small fee to lurk if they are that nuts!

I don't think the intent of this site is to be private. I mean, I found LIWeddings not to post, but to seek advice, ideas.. same here. Especially this Parenting board, a lot of moms are just seeking advice and information. Sometimes, real hand knowledge and experience is better than informative websites, i.e. like when we ask what's the best diaper cream?
I have Xanga and there are a lot of privacy options on there. There could be an option EVERY SINGLE TIME you post to have it "protected" so that only a list of people can see it. You can create several lists of friends and select them accordingly. It could as simple as clicking a check box option. Maybe it can be created under "Notify me everytime someone replies to this topic".
As for Kate07, a lot of times, the prettier girls are more popular and attract more friends, that's probably what her intent was, probably why she chose Miss Universe as her face!
