A chemical pregnancy is a very early miscarriage. In my case, I m/c'ed three days before AF was due and happened to go to the Gyno and had bloodwork done- it came up with low levels of HCG.

Yep. I had one where I got a positive(at night) on 11 DPO, then got AF about 3 days later. My hcg went from 50 to 0 in that time.

I had one also....
but my pregnancy ended at 7 weeks....the doctor still called it a chemical pregnancy because no heartbeat was detected on the ultrasound.....it is a fancy word for an early miscarriage...

Re: This Might Be a Dumb Question...
basically, it means the embryo implanted, but then couldn't be sustained for some reason. So you will "chemically" test positive for hcg, but the embryo will really never further develop.
ETA: From what I have read, they think this happens because of a "bad" egg or sperm. Most people do not even know they have them unless they test very early before AF is due. They will usually just get AF on schedule or a couple of days late.
