This will probably end up on travel, but a Montauk question

Is Montauk good for a weekend getaway? What is there to do? We were thinking of going to Martha's Vineyard for our anniversary, but it's a bit far for a weekend trip. Is Montauk similar to Martha's Vineyard?

Well i've never been to Martha's Vineyard so i can't compare, but i did live in Montauk my whole life (up until a few years ago).

When are you planning on going?

Well june will definitely be a nice time to go, especially if the weather is nice enough for you to go to the beach.

As for what to do, you can rent bikes/mopeds, go horseback riding, go into East Hampton and do some window shopping (unless of course you can afford it Chat Icon) go out on a fishing boat, go to the lighthouse, do some hiking, etc.

At night... there is the 1 movie theater that usually plays only 2 different movies (one at the 7pm showing and the other movie at 9pm), get some drinks at cyrils, go out to dinner, go to some of the bars, watch the sunset at topside or the Montauket, etc.

It really just depends on what you want to do. Chat Icon

Have you ever been to block island?

oh okay nevermind then (it's about a 2 hour boat ride from montauk). Chat Icon I was going to say that block island and montauk are very similar if you've been there. But i just read up above that you're in MD so the chances of you going to block island are pretty slim.

montauk is nice. walk around town. go to the beach. swim (if your hotel has a pool), go to gosman's dock - there's some shopping there. they have a little movie theater and then you can take a ride to east hampton which is a little livelier. montauk has great charm to it.

I wouldn't think that Montauk is a romantic area...you might be better off going to the North Fork.
Montauk is a fun town and there are things to do, I just wouldn't consider it romantic. It's more family/fishing oriented.
The North Fork is more quaint - you have the vineyards, various little towns and restaurants. I would think it's more along the lines of Martha's Vineyard.

I'd choose the North Fork for a romantic weekend - Greenport is adorable and quaint -

Do you have a hotel in mind for Montauk?

If you are going for your anniversary--I agree with the girls above. I'd check out the North Fork instead. There is more to choose from with the vineyards, aquarium, shopping and restaurants.

If you're already staying in Montauk, you could just do a day trip to Block Island. It's a high speed ferry this year, takes about 45min each way. It's also quaint and casual, cute little shops, nice beach atmosphere, great for bike riding(can bring your own bike over on the ferry) or rent a moped to go to the bluffs and lighthouse.

Block Island is a great idea!! I think that would be better then staying in Montauk.

Montauk seems far from you, unless you're planning on being in NY anyway. I would think there are lots of great places closer. What about Cape May, NJ? Or Ocean City, MD? Or go south to N. Carolina? Virginia Beach?

Re: This will probably end up on travel, but a Montauk question

I think Montauk can definitely be romantic. It is very family oriented though.

I would recommend staying beach front: Royal Atlantic or Surf Club have rooms on the beach and are walking distance to town.

Definitely check out Gossmans, and of course, the lighthouse! The light house is on rocks, so bring some sneakers so you can explore the surrounding beach.

Although loud, check out the town pizza place for dinner one night.
