Re: Those of you feeding your dog human instead of dog food, come in!!
I'm starting tomorrow. They have now recalled Alpo Prime Cuts which I just fed my dogs. Enough of this. I plan to brown chopped meat, drain off the fat and add steamed vegetables. If I make chicken, fish, or turkey, I'll make sure I have enough for them and make extra vegetables as well. I'll add gravy when I make that. Most of what I make is either in the crockpot or the oven so nothing is too fatty. I'll do what I have to, but, I will never buy dog food again.

Re: Those of you feeding your dog human instead of dog food, come in!!
So far I've been feeding Rocky 2 hard boiled eggs in the morning. In the evening he gets white rice mixed with either drained ground beef or boiled chicken. He's loving the no dog food thing

Re: Those of you feeding your dog human instead of dog food, come in!!
We have ALWAYS fed Tiger human food. He would NOT eat canned dog food. We usually feed him boiled chicken, and sometimes chopped meat, or turket meat. We sometimes add rice to it, or eggs

Gizmo is now refusing his bisqits! I am sure there is nothing wrong with them, but this whole thing is making me so paranoid. I found this website: Homemade dog treats recipes

Re: Those of you feeding your dog human instead of dog food, come in!!
We are going to start now. But we have 2 dogs and 7 cats!
It's so scary. They just keep expanding the list. 2 weeks ago we bought our yorkie one of the first recalled products, the packaged eukanuba. For some reason she just refused to eat it, thank god.
We were thinking browned chopped beef with rice and steamed veg for the dogs
tuna or boiled chcken for the cats. I know that cats can eat just meat, but dogs need to have grains

For those of you planning on going the all out "natural" route- PLEASE do your research as to what nutrients your dog actually needs.
Most people food alone (especially cooked) does not provide everything a dog needs to thrive. There are numerous websites that will tell you what extra supplements you should be adding to your dog's food.
For instance, Google BARF diet to get examples of the types of recipes I'm talking about.....

Yes, I will be adding rice. I will, also, be adding crushed dog biscuits as filler. You need to give them something hard for their teeth. I, really, can't tell you how much I will give them. I have three dogs and what I did with the dog food was to give them each two cups of dry and then divide a can of wet among them. I'll have to just judge what I do now when I put it in their bowls. Whatever I do will be better than what is happening now.

I will say that this stuff is pretty good. It's made by Dr. Harvey and it involves 6 grains, 14 types of vegetables & various spices, etc. You just add protein.

Re: Those of you feeding your dog human instead of dog food, come in!!
From Rachel Ray:
Pumpkin Barley 1 quart chicken broth 1 tablespoon unsalted butter 1/4 cup long-grain rice 3/4 cup pearl barley Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg 1/3 pound ground turkey or ground turkey breast 1 cup canned pumpkin puree Salt
1. In a small pot, warm the chicken broth over low heat. 2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat, then add the rice and barley and toast for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season the grains with the nutmeg and stir in half of the warm broth. Cook until the broth bubbles, about 5 minutes. Then add the turkey, crumbling it as you drop it into the skillet, and cook until the liquid is absorbed by the grains, about 5 minutes. Stir in the remaining broth, 1/2 cup at a time, allowing the broth to be fully absorbed before adding more. Cook until the barley is tender, about 18 minutes. 3. Stir in the pumpkin puree. Cook over medium heat until just heated through, about 1 minute. Season to taste with salt.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Boo-sotto 4 Servings PREP TIME: 20 min; COOK TIME: 40 min
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO), 2 turns of the pan 3 garlic cloves, crushed 1 small onion (to be grated for its juice—Boo loved the flavor but couldn't break down onions) 2/3 cup arborio rice 2/3 cup barley Salt and freshly ground pepper 1/2 cup dry white wine 4 cups warm chicken stock or low-sodium chicken broth (keep over low flame) 1 pound ground veal or turkey 1 cup grated Parmigiano- Reggiano cheese (a few good handfuls) A handful of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
Preheat a deep skillet (or wide 4-quart saucepan) over medium heat. Add the EVOO (2 turns of the pan), and the garlic, then grate the onion juice into the skillet. Cook for 2 minutes, then add the rice and barley. Season with salt and pepper and cook for 2 to 3 minutes more. Add the wine, raise the heat to medium-high and cook away the liquid, about 1 minute. Add a few ladles of the warm stock to cover the rice and barley, then drop in the ground meat in small bits. Stir frequently and continue to ladle in the stock until the rice and barley are cooked al dente, about 22 minutes. Stir in the cheese, adjust the seasoning and garnish with the parsley.
As Boo got older, she needed a careful balance of meat and carbs: lean protein and a large amount of carbs. (Yup, that was my girl!) My mom and I would make this for Boo and end up eating as much as she did. Humans: Eat this with a green salad.
Re: Those of you feeding your dog human instead of dog food, come in!!
I am not sure I would give a dog nutmeg.......
I agree with Porruss...google BARF & see what you come up with. Also be aware of how you prepare the food. If you can prepare your meats in a way that drains off the excess fats then that is better rather than have them seeping them back up.
