Different kinds of places. What type of event are you talking about? I've been to events at Oheka Castle, most of the country clubs, catering halls and then other types that are outdoors.

Chinese auction type event. We are not having much luck right now finding a place, so I was wondering if there was a plce that is "known" to accomodate these types of events.

Try the Fire Department.... Talk to them and explain to them why you want to hold one. They are very understanding.

Villa Lombardi's, A polish hall in Port Jefferson Station, Bellport Country Club-I've been to a lot-most of them were at catering halls.

Hotels. I've been to some in the ballroom, and others in small meeting rooms.

Have you tried a local bar yet Julie? What about firehouses, school gyms/auditoriums, halls... in the town where the family is from? No luck?

Re: Those of you who have been to fundraisers in Suffolk County...
I'm a member of the Hibernians in Babylon and we have Chinese auctions there all the time. They have a hall that can accomodate over 200 and it's very cheap to rent.
ETA: Is this for a specific charity? What town is the family from? There is a Hibernian hall in Selden and East Islip too.

When we were looking at wedding venues we went to The Bayview House at Captain Bill's in Bay Shore. While we were there they were setting up for a fundraiser...

Julz, the Setauket Neighborhood House can be rented for not a lot of $$$ but you need to bring in your own catering.
