Those of you who teach and plan on extended maternity leave
DS is due in July and I planned on returning to work in November. Now DH and were talking about me taking off more time. If you teach on LI, do you know how long you can take off before you loose a step. For example if I didn't take off the whole year but maybe 1/2 or more at what point would the year not count for me towards retirement?
My DH is a teacher too and he thinks if I take off more than 5 months I loose the year/step.

You will accrue months per year for the retirement system - for example my DD was born in October, I was paid until dec therefore I got a whole year of nystrs credit for that year, but since I did t return to work until sept of the following year I only got 4 months of nystrs credit.
For step advancement, your anniversary date will change and you will move to the next step as per that date. My hire date was jan 15, I worked until (or really was pad until) dec 15. I was missing one month unntil my next step. When I can back the next sept I was on the same step for one month, then got my raise. My new anniversary date is oct 15.
Hope that make sense. Another consideration is seniority within uour district, which could affect you if you take an extended leave.

This all sounds right to me. The retirement system will add months rather than the full year. Your anniversary date and seniority will change based on when you return. I would check with your district though, bc many only allow you to return at certain points. Some will let you return mid year and others will only allow you to take a full year.

Thanks for the responses. I was thinknig of going back right after New Years which would have me out of work 4 months without pay since I am due back as of September 3rd. I'm still undecided but I appreciate the feedback.

in my district you can either come back after 12 weeks, the beginning of the semester or the beginning of the year.
like others said your anniversary date would change if you go unpaid for any of that time. and then you begin to lose seniority.
i would prob be more concerned about my seniority than the months for retirement.
