Those of you who went to Italy NOT on a cruise...
How did you get fromplace to place? I was all set to book our Mediterranean cruise and now Ray might not want to do the cruise anymore but just do Italy I was all excited for the cruise because 1. We wouldn't have to do the travelling... the ship will move as we sleep 2. We were going to Italy AND greece
I see his point, that if we go to onky Italy we will have more time in each place, and can go to more cities in Italy. But I am worried about travelling from place to place. We don't speak any of the language either What is best... train? Car? I would rather NOT do a tour.
Those of you who went there can you help please I want this vacation to be fun and stress free and I don't want us to end up being LOST half the time.

My brother and his girlfriend just booked a 10 day trip to Italy. They are going by train from place to place. NOT A TOUR! Liberty travel set it up, including some excursions so they can see what the want. $2300 a person.... Fly into Rome, and Fly out of Venice...Florence in the middle I think

Re: Those of you who went to Italy NOT on a cruise...
Julie - We did it in July, and we took the high-speed trains from Rome to Florence, then Florence to Venice.
It was a piece of cake, CHEAP, and easy. Trust me - with all the walking/excitement of Italy, you'll welcome the downtime on the train.
If you're going to Florence, I'll give you our hotel info - we could see the train station from the bar atop the hotel...nice and close.

When we went to Italy we flew city to city but travelling by train in Europe is very easy. Get yourselves a Rick Steve's Italian American Dictionary and his Italy book. It will give you tons of recommendations on how to get around and the dictionary is a lifesaver, especially in restaurants that don't have an English menu.

Re: Those of you who went to Italy NOT on a cruise...
We booked through Club ABC...I think it was Italy by Rail package and it was not a tour; however, we did meet up with several people who booked the same package and ended up meeting for dinner/drinks. It was great because the itinerary was planned for us and yet we did it all by ourselves.
We flew into Venice, then took high speed trains from Venice to Florence, then Florence to Rome. We extended our trip from what we booked with ABC and then went to Sorrento by train as well.
I can only speak for myself, but the trains were so easy and the language barrier was hardly a problem. I'm glad we did not rent a car, because the driving is insane there...never mind all the people with the mopeds!!
